Q: my brother thinks he had a mild heart attack in his sleep after passing out drunk. he woke up with odd chest pains just under his collar bone area but says its no muscles pain. he is 27 and healty( walks 4 miles to work every day) just drinks on pay day. i say no heart attack. i think he may have slept wrong, cutting off proper circulation. anybody experience this?

A: He can get a blood test to find out for sure. Enzymes are released in the blood during a heat attack. A blood test can detect these.

A: At your age your risk of any heart attack, in sleep or with exercise is pretty small.In one type of heart attack people have narrowing of heart arteries and when they exercise the blood can’t flow through fast enough to meet the oxygen needs of the heart.Another type of heart attack happens when a chunk of fatty plaque breaks off the inside of heart arteries and flows downstream until it blocks the whole vessel and stops blood flow to a part of the heart causing damage to the heart. During sleep, this would be more likely to be the cause since most people aren’t exercising during sleep.Things like smoking, high cholesterol, and any type of inflammation make it more likely to have and break off plaques.

A: I’ve had several heart attacks in my life due to a congential heart condition, but I can assure you I don’t always have a great deal of pain before an attack. Sometimes I do sometimes I don’t. Though i’ll admit I’ve never had one sleeping since that is when your heart is at it’s most relaxed state unless you’re having a nightmare but more than likely you’d wake up if you where having an attack.
