Q: I've read from so many different sources, and most of the time I get different answers. I don't believe that the cold air does it, but I know that I get sicker during the coldest months. What causes this? Could I get some good, reliable sources for the answer?
A: If you're referring to getting the common cold from cold weather, the answer is no. You can only get a cold from a cold virus. The reason we get more colds in the winter is because we are more confined to the indoors during this period (especially school) and the cold virus can rapidly move from one individual to another. The best way to prevent a cold is to do your best not to come in contact with those that are infected. Hard to do, I know. All you can really do is wash your hands with soap and water, especially if you are around people with colds. If you have a cold, use a tissue when you sneeze, don't shake a person's hand, etc. It's interesting to note that when you catch a cold, your body becomes immune to that viral strain and you can't catch it again. The reason we get so many colds, is because there are over 200 different cold virus's.
Can one get sick from being out in cold weather?
Q: My son is 10 months old and loves to be outdoors. When the weather is cold I make sure he is well covered and comfortable. What are the chances of him becoming ill from being out in the cold weather for short periods of time?
A: No you cannot get sick from being outdoors in the cold. It is a common misconception because most people get colds and the flu during winter--but that's only because people stay inside more with other people passing around germs. However, if your immune system isn't strong you may be more susceptable to catching a virus or "bug." If your son gets sick during the winter months it is more likely that he caught it from being indoors with other sick people, so make sure you wash his hands frequently and wipe down surfaces he touches often with Lysol or similar.
Why do so many people believe you can sick sick from being cold?
Q: According to prime time getting sick from the cold if your not wearing a jacket is the number 1 myth today. You have to get sick from a virus, which has nothing to do with the cold air. Scientific studies have even been done to prove that you can get sick from cold air. Most people that I know believe in this myth.
A: Old wives tales die hard sometimes. I think peoplebelieve that not wearing a coat while outside inthe cold will lower your resistence allowing youto become more susceptable to the cold virus. Personally, I think that is a bunch of bunk. Noteveryone has a good immune system.
