No. Viruses are not alive, because the processes of life that all “living” organisms must have is 1.it needs to produce waste, which viruses do not (but bacteria do) 2.use energy. Actually, viruses use energy, but not in the sam…

Why can it be argued that viruses ARE alive?
Q: Viruses are argued to be NOT alive because they can not reproduce without a host, don’t have a metabolism, aren’t made of cells, etc.But how can they be argued TO BE ALIVE?
A: They do contain the genetic information to self replicate even if they lack the machinery to carry the process out. They lack a membrane but do have a protein coat that shelters & facilitates the movement of the genetic material into the host cell. They may not fulfill all the definitions of life but they clearly participate in several shared biochemical processes especially the genetic code. They replicate with genetic variation so they have descent with modification therefore they evolve another aspect of living organisms.
Most scientists do not consider viruses to be alive because?
Q: Most scientists do not consider viruses to be alive because A) they infect a host cell. B) they are unable to reproduce on their own. C) they have no genes. D) no definite structural features are seen under the microscope. E) All of these. I am thinking A, but not sure?
A: B. While they do infect host cells, they only do it to reproduce. C is wrong because they do have genes (RNA), and D is wrong because viruses can be seen under a microscope, just not your average bio lab scope.
When did some start suspecting that viruses are alive?
Q: specific year…decade?
A: The first experimental transmission of a viral infection was accomplished in about 1880 by the German scientist Adolf Mayer, when he demonstrated that extracts from infected tobacco leaves could transfer tobacco mosaic disease to a new plant. However, he could not determine what caused the transfer.Dutch scientist Martinus Beijerinck, an assistant of Mayer’s, continued these experiments and discovered that this disease transferring agent could grow and reproduce in the cells of the plant tissues. In 1898, Beijerinck was the first to declare that this disease transferring agent was a “contagious living liquid”. Sometime later, it was given the name “virus”.The source links I posted below are my references.
