The story of Owen Meany is one filled with mystery and uncertainty. The significance of death is a topic of much discussion in the novel. There is no easy solution to a loved one’s death, but Johnny is able to appreciate his loved ones by remembering what they have taught him. In the case of his mother, Johnny was able to remember her teaching by immortalizing her figure in the silhouette she would place clothes on. This figure would serve to represent his mother and the values that she was able to teach him before she passed away. The compassion and understanding that he shows in the rest of his life was given to him by the memory of his deceased mother. The preacher remembers the forgiving persona of Tabitha and is able to forgive himself for his doubt. By living the ideals that Tabitha preached, the preacher finds meaning in his own life and in doing so commemorates Tabitha.
The death of Owen Meany also forced Johnny to remember a loved one that he had lost. Though Owen was like a brother to Johnny he taught him many ideals that Johnny would in turn change his life. While Tabitha taught him how he should live his life, Owen taught him how to believe in his faith. Owen lived a life of supreme faith and he was able to pass that on to Johnny when he was killed. Johnny himself says that all of his faith came from Owen as if it were transferred to him upon Owen’s death. Johnny’s remembrance for Owen is in his deep belief for a higher being. He remembers Owen by remembering God and in that way every time Johnny thinks of God, he thinks of Owen. His life is forever remembered by Johnny and his memory is never forgotten.
Dealing with the loss of a loved one is never easy for anyone, but by following the example of Johnny one can forever remember those that have died. Johnny keeps the memories of his mother and best friend alive by continuing their legacy. The author demonstrates that this is the only way to find some meaning in the passing of a loved one. The death of someone important is always a difficult thing to undergo, but keeping them alive forever is as simple as remembering and living from what they have done for you.
