The Lonely Pumpkin

Riley was extremely lonely. He was the oldest pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. He knew Halloween would soon be here and then he would have no chance of being bought.

“I need to get out of here!” he said to himself as another pumpkin near him was picked up by a happy child. Soon it would be dark and all the pumpkin would go to sleep. Then he would try to find a way to escape. He glanced at the countdown board on the manager’s office door. It clearly said there was 1 day, 3 hours, 17 minutes, and 23 seconds left until Halloween. Riley had his plan and smiled happily to himself as he heard the other pumpkins snore softly.

When Riley opened his eyes he realized it was daylight.

“No! No no no! I swore it was night time when I closed my eyes only for a moment!” he exclaimed with tears in his eyes. He was afraid to look at the countdown board. It said in its screaming, mocking red number that there were only 7 hours, 21 minutes, and 54 seconds left to Halloween.

“No one will want me so I absolutely give up,” he said as he let the tears role down his face. He dozed again as he awaited his fate for that night.

He awoke startled as the countdown clocked beeped 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds until Halloween. He frowned.

“Only morning will bring my fate. There is nothing I can do now,” he said to himself in a quiet voice.

He was awakened with a jerking motion. He opened his eyes sleepily and looked around. Finally, his eyes rested on a figure dressed fully in black and was missing a head. He knew this was the headless horseman. But the strange thing was he didn’t feel any fear. He felt affection as he would feel for an old friend.

“My dear head,” the voice roared loudly, “I have come to reclaim you as my own!”

Riley was beaming. “This is why I wasn’t purchased! I belong to the greatest guy alive! Thank you master for coming back! I knew there was a logical reason I wasn’t being bought!” he said as he was picked up and put onto the shoulder of the Headless Horseman.

The Headless Horseman and Riley road off into the full moon night and Riley was never sad again.
