Thanksgiving 2011 Events in Kansas City

Thanksgiving in Kansas City is about getting ready for the holiday season with breathtaking light ceremonies along with the arrival of Santa. So instead of the same-old dinner, football, and flipping through the black Friday ads why not start a new holiday tradition and attend one of these magical ceremonies instead.

The 82nd Annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony

This is one of the most popular lighting ceremonies in Kansas City which is located at the Country Club Plaza. On Thanksgiving night (November 24, 2011) the Pre-show performance will begin at 5:15pm followed by the ceremony which will last from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. The lights will be switched on at 6:50pm by native Kansas Citian and “Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet along with local meteorologist Gary Lezak, followed by a beautiful fireworks display. The ceremony will take place at the main stage in front of XXI Forever, at Nichols Road and Wyandotte.

Along with the lights and fireworks there will be performances by the Choirs from KSHB-TV’s “Sounds of The Holiday” along with the accompaniment of dancers from Jody Phillips Dance Company. The Starlight Theater STARS of Tomorrow will also perform throughout the show. Along with them will be finalists from the KC Superstar singing competition, sponsored by the Jewish Community Center.

“Christmas in the Sky”

On November 23rd at 6:00pm 99.7 and Jackson County will kick off their celebration for the holiday season and the opening of Longview Lake’s “Christmas in the Park”. There will be local celebrities, holiday performances, and a dazzling fireworks display synchronized to your favorite holiday music. Directions to “Christmas in the Sky”: Take 470 to Raytown Road Exit, Exit South on Raytown Road and follow to the Longview Lake Beach entrance. There will be directional signs posted off of Raytown Road.

Santa’s Arrival at Crown Center

On November 25th at 10am, Santa will arrive in a horse-drawn carriage to Crown Center (2500 Grand Blvd. KCMO) to begin the holiday season. With the help of his friend Perry the Penguin, Tip from Crayola and other characters, will join Santa as he makes his way to Crayola Christmas Land, where he resides through December 24th. This is a magical event which every child young and old will enjoy.
