So Long Colt, We Hardly Knew You

Ahhhh, Daniel “Colt” McCoy! You were the winningest quarterback in NCAA Division 1 history. Expectations were high for you as you entered the NFL draft.

Then you lingered unselected until the hapless, hopeless Cleveland Browns took a chance on you in the 3rd round of the NFL draft, and made you the 85th pick overall. What an unfortunate fall from grace for you.

Your baptism under fire came when both QB’s ahead of you fell victim to high ankle sprains. You played your heart out and gave it your all even though there was no intention of you taking even one gametime snap in your rookie year.

With the off season came the firing of your head coach, and the hiring of a new head coach named Pat Shurmer, who as the 2011 season mercifully comes to an end appears inept and unqualified. Shurmer is the primary cause of your regression this season. A protracted labor dispute made learning a new offensive system extremely difficult. An anemic offensive roster made up of second rate receivers and a sieve-like offensive line made for some serious on field beatings for you. Still you soldiered on, saying all the right team first things and rolling with the punches.

A punishing blow to your head by a ruthless and dirty player in a Pittsburgh Steeler uniform has apparently ended your season several weeks early. I’m guessing it ended more than that. How convenient a circumstance! Your “lingering” effects from that concussion gives the Browns the perfect excuse to sit you down, possibly for good.

The NFL is all about winning, and you my friend have not done much of that. There is an eerie feeling that the powers that be have pretty much already decided you are not the long term answer for the Cleveland Browns at the quarterback position, and so they made sure you did not get medical clearance to play any more this season so as to preserve your marketability to other teams.

You might as well pack your bags and be prepared to be traded this off season, most likely to improve the Browns first round draft position where they will pick your successor from the college ranks. This is how Holmgen will repay your efforts while he surrounded you with inferior talent and a lousy coaching staff.

Fare thee well young Colt. We hardly knew you.
