Science Fiction Author Anne McCaffrey Dies at 85

Anne McCaffrey, one of the most prolific writers in the Science Fiction genre passed away Monday, the 21st of November at age 85 after suffering a stroke in her home in Ireland.

Anne was best known for her Dragonrider’s of Pern series of novels, and while there is much out there on what she has written, I would prefer to share my memories of Anne’s stories, rather than just a lot of lists and dates.

I remember my first adventure with Anne, The Dragonriders of Pern! What a story, I could get lost in her books, tumbling into her worlds as if they were reality, and this world the dream. They were my great escape from the sadness that so often accompanies this life that we all must live.

Later on in life I discovered her book Acorna: The Unicorn Girl, this was a collaboration with Margaret Ball and later as the series progressed, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. The series was pure magic and I was devoted.

Anne’s gift to me, and so many others was far to precious to put a real value on, but for me, her books were priceless works of art, much like Vincent Van Gogh’s brilliant masterpieces. Her gift for the written word was legendary and I am sad knowing that this world has lost such a beautiful soul.

I would love to hear your thought and comments on Anne McCaffrey’s stories, what were your favorites? What will you miss the most?
