Review: Country Cheddar Rice-a-Roni

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I had a coupon for Rice-a-Roni and ended up picking up a box of their Country Cheddar variety. At the time, this purchase did not seem like that big of a deal because we have purchased other varieties from this brand (and cheaper rip-offs) and, while we do like the rice, never really thought it was anything special.

This is why, when we finally got around to making this product a couple nights ago (when we had some fish), it was more or less an afterthought. We needed a side dish and it was handy. But, it also wasn’t something we were looking forward to eating.

Until we tried it, that is.

When we made this rice, my wife and I were in a bit of a hurry. I was preparing for a chili cook off and she was taking my oldest daughter to a movie night at school. So, when we started preparing this in the microwave, we were actually a little upset with the fact it took more than 10 minutes to make; especially since we have had similar products that took only about 5 minutes.

However, the second we got to try this rice, my wife and I temporarily forgot we were in a rush and ended up making time for seconds. It was that good.

For one, this variety of Rice-a-Roni does not skimp on the cheese. I have had plenty of other “cheese” flavored rice that was nothing more than rice with a yellow coloring. This actually had a thick cheese coating to it. And, unlike so many others, the cheese really did taste like cheese. It didn’t have that salty taste I pretty much expect from most other products. In fact, it is one of the few products I’ve tried that was good enough to justify spending a little extra money on it and waiting longer for it to cook.

We didn’t get through all the rice in one night. But, even though we had leftovers, they didn’t last very long. My wife was scooping some onto her plate the next day for lunch (even though we were out of fish) and, by the next night, it was completely gone. Considering we usually end up throwing part of the rice away, that was pretty impressive.

This is a Rice-a-Roni variety I plan on buying again in the future and do recommend trying if you get a chance.
