Relationship Taboos of the Past

It is now 2011, and things that were considered dating taboos in the 1950s or 1960s are more common now than ever. The beliefs your grandparents held are now outdated and rarely practiced. Actions that could have gotten you sent away in the 1950s are now happening almost everywhere you turn. With the relaxed look at the way two people function together, love lives have become less complicated and more open. These are a few of the things that were taboo decades ago, and happen more frequently now.

Living together
Couples still catch a lot of flack for this, but it is way more common than you probably think. People are deciding to live together instead of getting married. Living together can be a great experience for both parties in learning about one another. I chose this route with my boyfriend. We have lived together for nearly two years and have learned a lot about one another and ourselves. Our relationship is stronger than ever.

Sex before marriage
The couples that wait until marriage are few and far between these days. Sex is all over the television, in music, and even in magazines. By the time girls hit junior high, they are already overly sexed. The stars that your tweens and teens are looking up to are dancing around poles, changing boys like their underwear, and dressing in sexy couture. I had a group of seven girlfriends in high school, and each one of us had lost our virginity by senior year. When you are out in the dating world, it is a rare occurrence to meet someone who is inexperienced and a virgin.

Having children out of wedlock
In earlier decades, getting pregnant out of wedlock was horrific. Some families sent the girls off to have the baby in a secret location. It was almost like committing a felony back then. Now, you see girls in high school walking around with babies. It is still frowned upon to have a baby out of wedlock, but it is also more widely accepted.

There are many more taboos that have evolved over the last couple of decades, but these are some of the major ones. Only you can do what you think is right for you. The opinions of others shouldn’t matter, as long as you are happy. If I listened to what others have said about living with my boyfriend or having a child, I would be a very unhappy single woman.
