Recap: ‘Burn Notice’ Season 5 Episode 13 ‘Dead to Rights’

In “Burn Notice” Season 5, Episode 12, “Dead to Rights,” we find our intrepid hero, Michael Weston, facing down the business end of a gun wielded by a very angry Agent Pearce, who is convinced that he killed Max.

Spoilers surely follow.

It takes about 10 minutes or so of screentime for Michael and company to convince Pearce to go after the real killer, a Romanian named Tavian, for Michael to confront Tavian, and for Tavian to take himself out of the game in a grand manner.

So Michael has cleared himself, though Pearce is still very mad at him. Maddy gives him one of those annoying lectures about how he better appreciate how his friends keep risking their lives for him, but aside from that all is right with the world. This state of affairs lasts for as long as it takes for Michael to get back to the loft.

Larry, who we thought was languishing in an Albanian prison, is waiting for Michael. It seems to be Mr. Weston’s day to be at the business end of guns carried by people who are upset with him. The upshot is that Larry requires Michael’s help involving a job penetrating the British consulate and planting a file in the diplomatic pouch. Providing the codes for entry into the building is an agency shrink named Anson whose wife is being held hostage with a bomb strapped to her.

There is a nice “Mission Impossible” set piece that involves talking their way past some guards, convincing them not to pay attention to the noises coming out of the office, and the use of power tools to break into the British consulate offices. Naturally there is more than meets the eye here.

Fi and Sam discover Anson’s wife has already been blown up. Why this has happened is not clear. But it ends with Fi planting a bomb on the window to the office where Larry is waiting for Michael to finish up so, no doubt, he can kill him. Fi distracts him by firing a few long range rounds at the bullet proof window. Then, having maneuvered him into position, blows him up.

Oddly this creates some secondary explosions that essentially trash the entire building and kill the two innocent guards. Fi, the former mad IRA bomber, is devastated by this.

Now here is the twist that I saw coming about 20 minutes before.

Anson was not an innocent shrink who was being blackmailed into coughing up some codes to Larry. He had actually hired Larry to do the job that maneuvered Fi into killing two innocent men. Anson is the last survivor of the conspiracy that burned Michael and had created an organization that used burned spies for black bag operations. He now has Michael and Fi in the hollow of his hand.

My guess is poor Anson. He has no idea what will happen to him when the show starts back up in November.
