Opel Released First Details About Upcoming Mokka Crossover

Rumors about an Opel crossover smaller than the Antara started to spread online for some time now, especially after Opel’s American “cousin”, Buick, unveiled their Encore. And the German carmaker didn’t wait too much and after the Encore made its debut at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, they released the first details of the new crossover, which will be called the Opel Mokka and which will compete the Nissan Juke.

The Opel Mokka is based on the Opel Corsa’s platform and measures only 31 cm (12.2 inches) less than the Antara, with a total length of 4.28 meters (16.5 inches), so it will fit the urban traffic perfectly, just like the Nissan Juke (4.13 meters/162.5 inches), the Mitsubishi ASX (4.3 meters/169.3 inches) and even the Dacia Duster (4.31 meters/169.7 inches). Even though the wheelbase hasn’t been announced in the official press release, it will probably be similar to the Buick Encore’s, 2.55 meters (100.4 inches) which means both front and rear passengers will have plenty of interior space. Opel also mentioned that no less than 19 storage spaces will be available on the Mokka.

The interior is quite familiar to Opel fans, resembling the Opel Meriva’s, with round, pleasant shapes that seem to be designed for women with fine tastes. But also for those with utility on their minds, because the trunk offers 533 liters of storage space and after the rear seats are folded the total luggage space increases to 1,370 liters (the Nissan Juke offers 250/830 liters, the Mitsubishi ASX 416/1,190 and the Dacia Duster 475/1,636 liters).

At launch, the Opel Mokka will be available with three engine options: a 1.6-liter gasoline unit that delivers 115 hp and 155 Nm of torque, available only with front wheel drive and a six speed manual, a 1.4-liter turbo diesel producing 140 hp and 200 Nm of torque mated to a six speed manual and with all wheel drive as an option and the third option, a 1.7-liter CDTI diesel delivering 130 hp and 280 Nm that can get all wheel drive and a six speed automatic transmission as standard. All engine come with Start/Stop technology as standard and the German engineers promise the Mokka will offer a safe and comfortable road behavior.

Another chapter where the Opel Mokka sounds great is the interior features list. Among standard or optional features we have “Opel Eye” (with road signs and possible dangerous situations detection), AFL+ adaptive Bi-xenon lights and the lane departure warning system. The FlexFix option will also be available, offering the possibility to transport up to three bikes and among the luxury features we’ll see the rearview camera or the 18 inch wheels.

That’s about all Opel released so far, but the car is scheduled to make world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March and we’ll definitely find out more about the car’s performance level, fuel economy, pricing and launch schedule.
