Mammogram Excuses Busted – Just Do It

Mammograms are the most effective test we currently have to detect breast cancer in it’s early stages. The early stages of cancer are key, it’s the time when cancer is most curable, it’s the time you want the cancer to be found. A mammogram can do just that, but you’ve got to overcome the excuses and just do it. Here are the top six mammogram excuses busted.

I Can’t Afford a Mammogram

You can’t afford not to have a mammogram and there are agencies which will help. The American Cancer Society or Susan G. Komen for the Cure will help you find low cost or even no-cost options so you can get a mammogram. Contact either agency to discuss the options.

I’m Too Busy

Really? Would you have time for cancer treatments? A mammogram takes about 15 minutes, treatment for stage 4 cancer is on-going and takes up all a patient’s time and energy. Take 15 minutes out of your busy schedule and get a mammogram.

I’m Too Young

The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms start at age 40, but that does not mean if you are under 40 you’re too young for a mammogram. Your family history must be considered, and if there’s breast cancer in your family, have a mammogram well before your 40th birthday.

Breast Cancer is Not in My Family

There are two main contributing factors to getting breast cancer – being a woman and getting older. Family history does play a role, but genetics comes in third. Even if no one in your family had breast cancer, you are still at risk and need a mammogram.

A Monthly Self-Exam is All I Need

Monthly self-exams are pro-active and essential, as part of a three-fold cancer prevention plan; monthly self-exam, yearly doctor’s exam and annual mammogram. When you do your monthly breast exam, focus on any and all changes, not just lumps. If anything feels or looks different, contact your doctor.

Mammograms Are Painful

Having your breast squeezed between two hard, cold metal plates is going to be painful. Cancer hurts worse. An experienced, compassionate radiologist (have mammogram done by a female radiologist who understands the pain) will warm the metal plates and do the compression in phases so there is no sudden pinch.

Lesson the pain by scheduling a mammogram right after your period when breasts are less sensitive and take a couple of your favorite pain relievers an hour before the mammogram appointment.
