Inexpensive and Easy Homemade Mardi Gras Mask

A Mardi Grad celebration is not the same without a fancy mask. An inexpensive and easy Mardi Gras mask is made from an eye mask. Decorate the eye mask with glitter, sequence, feathers and/or beads. The sky is the limit when decorating these inexpensive masks. Recycle items from home to make one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras masks.

Things You’ll Need:

Eye mask
White glue
Fringed lace
Glitter
Feathers
¼-inch dowel 18-inches long
Satin ribbon
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1 – Place the eye mask on a flat work surface. Remove the elastic strap from the face mask.

Step 2 – Squeeze dots of glue evenly spaced over the surface of the mask. Sprinkle glitter over the glued areas. Tap the side of the mask to remove excess glitter. Allow the mask to dry 30 minutes before proceeding.

Step 3 – Squeeze a line of glue around the outside edge of the mask. Glue a length of fringed lace around the outside edge of mask.

Step 4 – Wrap the ¼-inch dowel with satin ribbon. Gross-grain also works well but is not as flashy. Secure the ends of the ribbon to the dowel with a drop of hot glue.

Step 5 – Turn the mask over. Position the dowel on the right hand side of the mask so the long end extends past the bottom of the mask approximately 15-inches. Glue the dowel in place with a hot glue gun.

Step 6 – Position feathers along the upper half of the mask. This includes the sides and the top. Glue the feathers in place with hot glue. Add additional layers and colors of feathers as desired.

Use the traditional colors of purple, green or gold to create the Mardi Gras mask. Wear clothing that matches the colors. The more flamboyant, the better!
