An open space beneath the stairs might seem like a dead area, but it is far more useful than many people realize. It offers a small amount of headroom, but when using the area for storage, seating and other practical purposes, overhead clearance is not required. It is a highly underused area that should not be wasted, especially in a smaller home. Depending on the location, the unused space can become a music area or even a small art gallery. Whether the home is contemporary or traditional by design, the options for using an open space under the stairs are limitless.
I had an open staircase that led up to a loft and two bedrooms. Even though the foyer was large, I did not like the appearance of the enclosed staircase. I hired a carpenter to transform it into an open stairway. My options for using the space were suddenly limitless. I decided to add a beautiful built-in storage bench and decorative shelving.
Add a Built-In Storage Bench and Shelving
The open space under the stairs was the ideal location for a sturdy built-in bench. It offered enough room for built-in side shelving. My dad built a basic bench using pine. It had a hinged top, and the interior was a great place to store extra blankets, jackets and other outerwear. I painted the bench to match the adjoining wall. It looked as if it was an original part of the home. I also added a comfortable cobalt blue cushion.
My dad did not use the entire space under the stairs for the bench. He left plenty of space for cube style shelves. The shelves were also designed using pine, and I painted the wood to match the bench. I used the shelves to display porcelain collectibles with cobalt blue accents.
Place a Desk and Chair in the Open Space Under the Stairs
The space under the stairs is a great place for an executive style desk and a stylish chair. The area can be used as an open office or as a place to check email on a laptop computer. I have a beautiful cherry wood desk that I would have repurposed to the space under the stairs if I had not made the decision to add a built-in storage bench and shelves. It would have looked great with a small decorative lamp and a couple of tabletop works of art or small framed photos.
Add a Low Profile Table and Wall Art
A low profile table is a great addition to a space beneath a staircase. It is especially helpful if it includes a couple of drawers and a lower shelf for holding books or other items. An eye catching work of art can be hung on the wall above the table. In addition, place a pair of high quality battery-operated candles on the table. They will add beauty and ambiance to the surrounding decor.
