How to Market Yourself in Online Dating

Getting into the dating game, or back into the dating game, can seem stressful enough. You might spend hours going over what you’re going to wear, how you’re going to act, and what you might say when you see someone who catches your eye. Without knowing it, you are marketing yourself in real world dating. You want people to see your best and most attractive side. You want to show off and set yourself apart from everyone else. Now that the dating scene is shifting into the more popular online scenario, you still have to present yourself in the best light. Millions of singles are out there posting pictures and bios online in hopes to meet that special someone, or just to meet someone in general. Here are some ways you can spice up your profile to set yourself on a higher pedestal than everyone else.

Don’t Be So General
We all like to think we are different from everyone else, and in most cases we are. However, when it comes to filling out a profile for an online account, regardless if it’s a dating account or a Facebook account, we tend to make things as general as possible. The bad thing about generalizing your profile on a dating website is you most likely won’t catch someone’s eye unless your profile picture is drool worthy. There are different ways you can break out of the profile boredom. Instead of saying you like music, list your top five favorite bands. You might want to also list where you like to frequent as this might increase your chances of connecting with someone who visits the same hot spots.

Be Honest
Unless you’re looking for a one time fling, lying about what you do for a living or your personal interests will not benefit you in the long run. No, having a job as a data entry clerk isn’t as exciting as being a personal trainer for Drew Brees. However, the longer you interact with a person the sooner they will find out about your real line of work and if you really have kids. You can be honest without sounding boring. If you work as a customer service representative, you can say that you are an Account Manager. If your job title is a Bank Teller, you can say you are a Financial Assistant. Make your occupation sound interesting and dress it up a little.

Your First Date
Most dating websites will ask you what you would do on a first date. This is where you get to make a good impression on your viewers. Don’t let your response sound drab or cheesy. In other words, leave out the typical dinner and a movie response. If dinner and a movie is your thing, say what kind of movie you would like to go see and where you would like to have dinner. It shows what flicks hold your interest and what kind of food you like. Also try a creative response like an outing to the zoo or a picnic in the park. If you’re not the outdoors kind of person, a first date can be a trip to the museum or dinner at a bar that has a nice outdoor patio. Of course you want to make your first date enjoyable and comfortable for you and your prospective other, but make it sound exciting in your profile as well. It might make someone want to send you a message instead of clicking “Next”

Of course, not all of us are able to put our thoughts into words. If you’re someone who can’t be creative with your online dating profile, have a friend write one for you. It might take some time to think about how you want to market yourself in the dating world, but it will help make you seem more interesting before the person has even interacted with you.
