How to Make Hot Glue Snowflakes (and Other Ornaments)

Bored of the same, tired cut out paper snowflakes? Looking to try your hand at a new holiday craft this winter season? Well, go no further than your current craft supplies! If you’ve got a hot glue gun, and a few other items, you’ll be making these sweet, sparkly, seasonal decorations in no time.

But wait! Once you learn this easy hot glue technique, try some of the fun twists listed below. Here’s how to make hot glue snowflakes, as well as some other ornaments too:

Required craft materials:

– hot glue gun (with extra sticks of glue)
– iridescent glitter
– tin foil or metal surface
– ribbon, string or ornament hooks
– optional: sequins or rhinestones

Instructions:

1. The steps to make a hot glue snowflake couldn’t be any easier! Prepare a metal pan or piece of tin foil on a flat surface, and generously sprinkle with iridescent glitter.

2. After pre-heating your glue gun, draw the basic snowflake shape of six branches with the hot glue onto the glittery pan. Easily make this by drawing a wide “X”, then putting a straight line down through the middle. Make sure the lines are thick and there are no gaps. Continue to add details, lines and shapes onto the snowflake in hot glue.

3. Once your snowflake is drawn, go over all the lines one more time, adding a second layer of glue (to strengthen the snowflake once removed).

4. If desired, place a drop of hot glue in the middle of the snowflake and add a silver sequin or rhinestone for an extra touch of sparkle.

5. Allow the hot glue to dry for a few minutes, then carefully peel an edge upward. Slowly remove the rest of the snowflake from the foil or metal.

6. Cut and attach a ribbon, string or ornament hook to hang your new, sparkly hot glue snowflake!

Craft alternatives:

– Snowflakes look perfect with the translucency of the glue, but you can also create other ornaments with this fun technique. Try writing a family member’s name in glue (drawing with at least two layers), or words such as “Joy,” “Winter,” “Peace,” “Love,” or “Christmas.” When writing in hot glue, always use cursive to make sure the letters attach.

– Rather than iridescent glitter, try sprinkling silver or colored glitter under the glue.

– Instead of snowflakes or words, try drawing objects (reindeer, bells, snowmen, or other holiday items) in the glue.

– Try painting over the dried glue snowflakes (or other drawn objects or words) with spray paint or acrylic paint for a splash of color.
