How to Make a Princess Theme Cake Pop Stand Using Dollar Store Materials

Cake pops are all the rage these days. They come in different forms and sizes. Adults and children love them. Some people opt for cake pops instead of the traditional cakes and cupcakes to celebrate an occasion. They make excellent favors, too!

I have been making cake pops for almost a year now and one of the things that I enjoy doing besides the process of making and decorating the cake pops is creating the stand to hold them. Cake pop stands that you find online are often generic and lack character. I customize cake pop stands to match the theme of the party and the cake pops that will go on them. Recently, I received an order for a princess themed cake pops for a princess theme birthday party. The mom opted for cake pops and some cupcakes. I offered her a cake pop/cupcake stand for lease to save her money. Since she may not have any use for the stand after the party, I told her that I will make it for her for the price of the materials and some labor. This way, I save her some money while giving her daughter a beautiful stand that’s worthy of a princess.

I usually go to craft stores for my materials using store discount coupons. However, before I even go to craft stores, I try to go to thrift shops like the Dollar Store. They carry lots of items that you can use for parties and craft projects. Needless to say, I decorated the princess theme cake pop stand with mostly Dollar Store finds.

Materials Needed:

14-inch diameter round cardboard base

4-inch-by-4-inch square foam
Gift wrapping paper (pink)
Scissors
Glue sticks
Glue gun
Decorative ribbon (choose a design to complement the colors of the felt paper)
Assorted felt or craft paper (pink, green, purple, yellow)
Pastel colored markers

1. Create the foundation.

Cover the 14-inch diameter round cardboard base with a pink (or any girlie color) gift wrapping paper. Embellish it with a complementary ribbon to give it a finished look. I chose a pink grosgrain ribbon with green dots to complement the colors that I will use predominantly on the cake pops, which will come in pastel green, pink and purple.

Place the largest (12-inch) round wreath foam base on top of the covered cardboard. This will be your first tier. Use a glue gun to attach it securely on top of the cardboard base. Then, glue the 10-inch diameter round foam wreath base on top of the 12-inch foam base. This will be your second tier. Glue the 8-inch round flat foam base on top to cover the hole. This will be your third tier. Then place the square foam on top. This will be your top tier.

2. Decorate the stand

Cut assorted felt or craft paper. I found felt paper in crown, butterfly and flower precut shapes that go well with the princess theme. If you cannot find the precut shapes, you can trace the shapes using a template that you can find on coloring books or online. Then, cut the pieces.

Cover each foam base with the shapes you cut. Cut the crown shapes into two, with the top part of the crown in 3 inches high to use for the first tier. Make sure to leave at least 1/2 to 1 inch to cover the top of foam. Overlap each one to cover the base sides completely. Then, cut the top butterfly shaped felt paper in half and used the upper half to cover the second tier. Overlap each other to prevent gaps. Use the lower half of the butterfly cutouts to cover the third tier. Once done, cover the fourth tier with the flower shaped felt paper. Alternate the colors on each tier to make them more visually appealing.

Glue together two door hanger felt cutouts with the princess crown. Place a barbecue skewer sandwiched in between the two pieces. Make sure to leave the bottom 3 inches of the skewer exposed so you can use it to insert to the top square. Again, if you cannot find ready made ones, make the cutouts yourself using some templates you find online. If you cannot find the templates, cut two pieces in rectangular shapes, at least 2-inch-wide by 6-inch long. Then, cut out pieces to put on top in the shape of a crown. Write the number for the age on a decorative cutout using a pastel marker. If you find a number cutout felt, you can use that too.

Use felt letters to spell out the celebrant’s name and place them on top of the front crown.

3. Place the cake pops on top of each the first three tiers. Arrange them in alternating colors.

That’s it! You just made a princess theme cake pop stand using Dollar Store materials.

TIP:

You can reuse the foam and cardboard base by changing the decorations to fit any occasion.
