How to Find an Affordable Summer Camp for Your Child

Winter may not yet be over for some, but many parents are already thinking about where they will send their children for summer camp. Summer camp is a must for many families, when their children are off from school, and parents still have to work. Despite the fact that the government is saying the economy is improving, many families are still keeping their budgets tight. Summer camp prices however are not getting any lower, so how can families afford them? Below you will find a few ideas and suggestions on how you can make sure your family can afford summer camp this year.

Make a list

Start by making a list of local summer camp locations. Take into consideration the distance you live from the camps as well. In some cases the farther away a location is the more it will cost you. The reason for this is due to the transportation that is included for the camp. Look for local camps that perhaps you can drop your child off at yourself. Try to create a list of at least five to six summer camps in your area.

Create a separate account

Starting at the beginning of the new year, you will find it best to start setting aside money for your child’s summer camp. If you have not been able to start at the beginning of the year, than a few months prior to the start of summer will still give you a decent amount of savings. Pick a reasonable amount to set aside from each pay check.

Look for free camps

You can look in your local area for free camps as well. Some communities arrange special free camps during the summer months to keep young kids busy. It is worth it to do a little bit of research to find one. Be sure to read the reviews of the day camps before you sign up your child. Free does not automatically equal good.

Avoid sleep away camps

It should really be no surprise that sleep away camps will cost you more money. Instead limit your options to day camp’s only. This will help to make sure that you stay within budget.

Payment Plans

Some day camps offer payment plans so that you only have to pay a set amount each month. This makes it easier for a family to afford day camp. Especially if you have more than one child that you have to sign up for summer camp.
