How to Create a Medusa Halloween Costume

For a truly frightening costume, consider borrowing a idea from Greek Mythology and create a Medusa costume. According to the myth, Medusa was a beautiful sea nymph who angered the Goddess Athena who turned her into a hideous monster who had a hair made of snakes. Anyone who looked upon Medusa would turn into stone. If you see a picture or statue of Medusa, you will notice that she is portrayed as beautiful, with the exception of the snake hair, but you can go as pretty or ugly as you please. These costume instructions will help you create a Medusa costume.

Your hair is the most important aspect of the costume. You can use your own hair or a wig. Regardless of which you choose to use, you will also need pipe cleaners to match your hair, small rubber snakes, small rubber bands.

To create Medusa hair, part the hair into one-inch squares and braid the sections. Braid a pipe cleaner into each braid or wrap it around the braids to make the braids stiff and able to stand up and bend into shape. Lay a rubber snake a braid and attach it to your braid with rubber bands.

Wear a long white tunic dress for your costume. You can borrow an Egyptian costume or Greek Toga. Alternately, you can make a tunic dress by folding a ten foot length of fabric in half and cutting a hole for the head. Next, sew the sides closed from under the arm to the thigh, and add a long belt made of gold braided material. The belt should be tied around your body beneath the bust, with an X across the stomach, and then wrapping it around the waist.

Makeup is a very important part of the Medusa costume. You can choose to take the beautiful approach with impeccable makeup, perhaps a bit overdone. Another option is to use Zombie makeup to be as hideous as possible.

For accessories, add metal bracelets, preferably snake head bracelets and sandals.
