Green Treatments for Chronic Dandruff

Dandruff is a common condition in which flakes of dead skin are shed from the human scalp. Contrary to popular belief, it is not always caused by overly dry skin but can also effect individuals with oily scalps. There are a wide range of medical conditions known to cause dandruff, such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. Other common causes include dry scalp, oily scalp, head lice, the use of cheap hair care products, poor nutrition and food allergies, stress, lack of sleep, excessively high or low hair pH balance and dry environments. While many may find relief from dandruff with commercial shampoos and other anti-dandruff products, these products contain harsh chemicals which can be damaging to the hair over time. For all-natural remedies for dandruff, consider the following “green” methods.

Tea Tree Oil
As a natural anti-fungal, tea tree oil gives moisture to the scalp and roots. Tea tree oil can be used on its own or combined with other oils, lotions or shampoos. Massage tea tree oil onto the scalp and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing in warm water.

Vinegar
White or apple cider vinegar have been proven to treat mild cases of dandruff effectively. This is primarily due to the acidic properties contained in vinegar correcting the pH balance of the scalp. Rinse the hair thoroughly with vinegar prior to showering.

Sunlight
Exposure to natural sunlight provides anti-inflammatory properties to sufferers of scaly skin conditions due to the ultraviolet light. This may be one of the reasons that dandruff is typically less severe in the summer months compared to winter months.

Vitamin B6
While many vitamins aid in the appearance of healthy skin, Vitamin B6 is one of the most effective. It also provides sulfur which is vital to fight off dandruff and keep the scalp from flaking. Get Vitamin B6 from a variety of foods, including yeast, cabbage and eggs.

Rosemary
Used to increase circulation and renew hair follicles, rosemary provides a wide range of benefits to the hair and skin. Massage rosemary oil or one-part rosemary oil and one-part olive oil onto the scalp and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Crushed rosemary leaves can also be applied directly to the scalp.

Thyme
Dried thyme is a popular culinary and medicinal herb used for many purposes, including the treatment of dandruff. Boil 6 teaspoons of dried thyme into two cups water for approximately 10 minutes. Strain the thyme and allow it to cool. Massage the mixture into damp hair. Do not rinse out the thyme.
