Golden Benefits for Those Who Are of the Silver Age

I am not a huge fan of AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons. Credit is due their founders for coming up with the idea of creating a huge database of people over 50 simply by providing them access to discounts in exchange for a ton of personal information. This impression was highlighted while I was reading an article and the journalist referred to AARP as the union for older people. I know AARP does not represent me. People over the age of 55 and 60 can receive plenty of discounts without having to join any organization.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my favorite fast food chain offers a 10% discount to people over 60 and all you need to do is ask for it and show them identification.

Here is a list of some establishments that offer discounts or specials based on your age, and in most cases, all you need to do utter those golden words – “May I have the senior citizen discount.”

Age 55 – Restaurants

Arby’s; Chick-Fil-A; Chili’s; Denny’s; Dunkin Donuts; Fuddruckers; IHOP; Jack in the Box; McDonalds; KFC;

Long John Silver’s and Wendy’s

Age 55 – Grocery and Retail

Albertson’s; Fry’s Supermarket; Publix; Banana Republic; Dress Barn; K-Mart; Ross Stores

When you reach 60, the discounts become even more prevalent. In addition to those listed at age 55, these are deals available.

Age 60 – Restaurants

Applebee’s; Ben & Jerry’s; Burger King; CiCi’s Pizza; Culver’s; Einstein’s Bagels; Golden Corral; Mrs. Fields; Sonic; Subway and Village Inn.

Age 60 – Grocery and Retail

CJ Compare Food Markets; Food Lion; Great Valu; Gristedes Supermarket; Harris Teeter and Morton Williams Supermarket; CJ Banks and Kohl’s Department Stores

There are many discounts offered by the airlines and companies in the hospitality business that are yours for the asking. While I was compiling this list, I was amazed at the number of firms that offer reasonable discounts based on age. In this economy, we need to take advantage of each opportunity to save money. Next time that you are in your favorite store, simply ask what incentives there are for seniors.
