Funny Moments on ‘New Girl’ You’d Hate in Real Life

“New Girl” is the latest Zooey Deschanel sitcom about a girl (Jess) who decides to move in with three guys (Nick, Schmidt, Coach/Winston) after breaking up with her boyfriend.

The genius of sitcoms is finding humor in situations that don’t feel that funny when you are experiencing them yourself. This show is full of those moments. Here is a look at three:

What you’d hate: Being dumped.

Breaking up with a significant other is not usually a laughing matter, yet “New Girl” finds a way to make us laugh. Break-ups can be difficult times even when they are mutual; but in Nick’s case, it’s worse because he does not want to accept the news from his girlfriend Caroline. Funny moment: The laugh comes during the pilot episode in the form of a flashback. Schmidt reveals to Jess that Nick was dumped, and then there is a cut to a scene with Nick and his girlfriend. Caroline tries to break up with him as Nick has his hands over his ears and says loudly, “I can’t hear you. That means we’re not breaking up. We can’t break up if I can’t hear you. La-la-la-la-la.” If only that actually worked…

What you’d hate: Someone breaking your television.

In Episode 2 of the show, Jess accidentally breaks the guys’ television. It might not hurt so badly if Zooey Deschanel was the one breaking your television, but what is a TV fan to do without a TV? Besides the hassle and expense of having to buy another one, you’d hate missing the latest episode of “New Girl.” Funny moment: Jess is showing off her b-ball skills when she accidentally bounce-passes a basketball right into the guy’s flat-panel screen. “My bad,” she says. Winston responds to the accident, “You don’t know me like that but I need a TV.” The guys encourage Jess to go get her television back from her ex but she is reluctant to do so. Nick has the final word, explaining, “It’s important. It’s a television. It’s what brings all — just get us the TV!” True TV fans can understand the mix of annoyance and desperation in Nick’s voice.

What you’d hate:
Having an emotional new roommate.

Even though it is understandable that a girl would be emotional after a break-up, someone sobbing on the sofa for a week upon moving in isn’t the ideal new roomie situation. But that is exactly what Jess does during the pilot episode. Funny moment: After proclaiming the guys won’t regret Schmidt’s decision to let her move in, the camera cuts to Jess sobbing on the sofa while watching the movie “Dirty Dancing.” The guys stand there in disbelief as Nick asks, “What have you done Schmidt?!” Later, the rest of the scene plays out a bit like this: Nick to guys: “It has been a week of this madness. I’m going crazy, Schmidt. I can’t take it.” Coach to guys: “You know what, I got this.” Jess: “Hi Coach.” Coach, sternly: “Stop it! Stop.” Jess responds by crying harder. Coach, not knowing what to do: “Schmidt?”
