Five Provocative Haiku About 9/11

Author’s Note: I feel that remembrance of September 11th should be quiet and dignified, not endless advertising and commercialization. I’m disgusted when politicians mention 9/11 , to stir up false patriotism on unrelated issues. I’m offended that September 11th bursts from so many magazines and TV shows throughout the month of August, ultimately to sell advertising and products.

The five haiku presented, seek to balance the misuse of 9/11 to push products and legislation. These haiku ask you to think beyond the false patriotism in politics, television and news; think about what it really means to love your country and people. Ten years after 9/11, our country is in far greater distress than it was on that historic day. We shouldn’t forget the past, but it is of far greater importance to pay attention to the present. I have only love and respect for anyone affected by this sad day in history, a tragedy for the world, not just one group of people.

I.

It’s hard to digest

That a spot I’d once stood on,

Is now open air.

II.

An historic day

Tragedy, for the whole world

Exploited by greed

III.

Lest we forget, then;

Build monuments, wear ribbons.

Shall we ignore, now?

IV.

Make a holiday,

Out of solemn tragedy,

Over Whose God’s right?

V.

If all the soldiers

Came home, how would we survive

The huge lack of jobs?
