Far Ago and Long Away

Having nothing more to do
than slaughter time one day,
Yankee Doodle’s brother Stu
rode very far away.

He hoisted up a cold cigar,
the best one he could snatch,
and hoped that in a place afar,
he’d finally meet his match.

Exactly halfway through his trip
(wherever he was bound),
he gave his hair a little snip
and did not make a sound.

He met a stranger on the way
and tipped his hat too far.
I did not think, he tried to say,
that I’d be where you are.

To that the stranger soon agreed,
then offered this advice:
Whatever thing you think you need
is never worth the price.

If that’s the way it is to be,
said Doodle with a sneer,
then tell the man that I’ll take three
and start a new career.

So draw the lesson that you must
as you recite this verse.
All things rubber turn to rust
or maybe something worse.
