Fantasy Owners We’ve All Encountered

It doesn’t matter whether you have played fantasy sports for a long time or a short time; we have all come across these types of owners. These creatures can ruin your fantasy league or just be a mere annoyance. They can make us laugh or downright angry. Here are the top 5 fantasy owners who drive us crazy.

1. The Quitter: Every player has had this owner in their league at some point and they are the most despised. The quitter will either not show up for the draft, complain about who was selected for them, and then refuse to play their team or they draft their team, get off to a bad start to the season and just stop playing. This creature is detrimental to the league as a whole, depending on when you play this owner. Some teams benefit from playing them, while others are hindered by their lack of activity in setting their lineup. Once he infiltrates your league there isn’t much you can do about it, unless you’re in a custom league and a replacement owner can be found.

2. The Conspirator: This player often reveals himself before evolving into the quitter. The conspirator is the owner who has given up on his team. Before he departs though, he decides to benefit another owner in the league. This usually involves trying to trade his 2-3 star players to another team for their scrubs. An active league can neutralize the conspirator by vetoing his trades, thus making his transformation into the quitter somewhat painless. However, if they are allowed to accomplish their mission, they can upset the balance of the entire league, cause resentment among owners, and spawn more quitters.

3. The Trader: Annoying and funny is how I would describe this one. He is the guy who will trade just for the sake of making a trade. He loves the art of the deal. Sometimes the trades they offer are serious and you have to consider them, but most times, they are so one-sided (in their favor) that they are laughable. The trader is usually a season long player who is just trying to get something for nothing and is relatively harmless. Transforming into the conspirator is rare, but not unheard of.

4. The Nervous Nellie: Long time owners love when these creatures are in their midst. This owner will have a star player who has gotten off to a slow start to the season. Having little patience, they will then panic and either tries to trade the player for less than true value or they will outright release them and pick up the flavor of the week to replace them on their roster. After a few weeks, the nervous nellie will begin to whine as his former star player is back on track and producing for his new owner. Patient players are the natural enemy of the nervous nellie.

5. The Homer: Rare and once thought extinct, the homer still lurks in the shadows among us. This creature will do everything in his power to make sure his fantasy team is a collection of players from his favorite pro team. He will do his best to select all of them on draft day. The players he was unable to draft, he will try to acquire through trades. The homer can be meek or vicious, depending on where he falls on your schedule. He’s usually spotted in fantasy football leagues, his native habitat, where it is easier to draft his favorite players.

These are just a few of the owners I have encountered in playing fantasy sports. If you know of others, please point them out.
