Fan: Offseason Tweets Reveal Michael Vick’s Humble Side

According to a Yahoo! Sports report, shades of the old Michael Vick are revealed in the Sept. 2011 issue of GQ magazine. In the story and photos, Vick displays a sense of confidence that was lacking since being implicated in 2007 for involvement in an illegal interstate dog-fighting ring that landed him behind bars for 19 months. “I have always been an outstanding football player,” Vick says in the GQ article. “I have always had uncanny abilities, great arm strength, an immense ability to play the game from a quarterback standpoint.” However, anyone who questions whether Vick is a changed and humbled man should take a look at his tweets from the 2011 offseason.

Making Amends for Dog-Fighting Scandal

On July 19, Vick tweeted “In DC for humane event.” Since Vick’s 2009 release from prison, he has spoken out against dog-fighting at dozens of events. Most of the events are attended by at-risk youths who may be inclined to get involved with illegal activities such as dog-fighting rings. The teens in attendance get to hear a first-hand account of Vick’s troubled past and his message of hope.

Training for the NFL Season

On July 31, Vick tweeted “Sorry twitter fans if I haven’t been responding. Just extremely busy preparing for this season. #blessed”. Last season, he completed 233 passes for a total of 3,018 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Philadelphia Eagles will be the team to beat in the NFC East this year can repeat his 2010 performance. Since being released from prison, Vick has been extremely dedicated to the sport of football and learning the intricacies of the quarterback position.

Blessings

On July 14, he tweeted “Goodmorning twitter folks…. Everybody push to have a positive blessed day!!!# salute.” Vick has said repeatedly that he is blessed to have been given a second chance to resume his football career. He has also taken a leadership role off-the-field that includes doing charity work for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Helping Youths

On Aug. 10, Vick tweeted “Check out and follow….Collegeprepworld. My big cousin Dwight Vick doing big things for the youth and their families.” Vick posted this to help promote a site that enhances a child’s likelihood of obtaining an academic or athletic scholarship through research and recruiting services.

I am a Michael Vick fan because he is a leader both on and off the field. While he made many mistakes over the course of his career, I was impressed with his charitable work for the Humane Society of the United States following his release from prison.
