Don’t Dare Crash with a Deer

Each year, collisions with animals cause over 150 fatalities and over $1 Billion in property damage. The risk of a collision with a deer or other animal is highest from October through January and in the months of May and June. Be alert-even on familiar roads you can run into an animal. This is especially the case during the period from sunset until sunrise when overall visibility is especially low. Heed road signs warning of animal crossings. Always obey speed limits and wear a safety belt.

Fences along roads do not guarantee safety. Deer can walk over or around them. Drive with caution and at a safe speed. Make it a regular practice to scan the road from side to side while driving. Be mindful to keep your windshield clean.

When safe, put your high beams on to achieve greater visibility. Remember to respect oncoming traffic. Watch to see what is happening on the road. Take clues from other cars. If you see blinking lights or hear horns honking it may be a sign that animals are on the road. If you see one deer, then be mindful that there are likely to be others around and stay on guard.

To scare an animal to get it to move, honk your horn in short intermittent bursts. Also, blink your lights. If there is an animal in the road and a crash is inevitable, avoid swerving into the opposing lane of oncoming traffic. Your best bet is to brake in a controlled manner. If you hit the animal, do not go near it. You could be injured from the wild gesticulation of the animal’s legs. Deer hooves are sharp and dangerous. Pull over as soon as it is safe. Put your hazard lights on. Call the police.
