Destination: Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia remains an iconic destination for adventurous travelers who seek something beyond the norm. Like any metropolitan area, this city offers a staggering variety of activities. Unlike most other metropolitan areas, however, Sydney’s location and history provides an underlying sense of untamed mystery.

Although this fact is obvious to those experienced travelers among us, it is important to remember that Australia rests south of the Equator, and therefore its seasons are opposite those of places such as North America or Europe. If you wish to experience the beaches during warm weather, it would be best to travel to Sydney during the months of December, January or February. Furthermore, and I cannot stress this enough, establish at least a basic plan prior to travelling to this amazing destination. The sheer number of activities and sites offered by Sydney can seem daunting and a traveler will experience more if he or she has investigated the options in advance. This especially applies to a vacation lasting a week or less.

My only regret regarding my own visit to Sydney stemmed from a failure to grasp just how many things there were to see and do in this most amazing of destinations. With only a week to enjoy this city and its surrounding areas, my visit would have greatly benefited from a bit more planning.

Your most advantageous mode of travel will depend a great deal on your plans. If you intend to limit your stay to Sydney proper, you may find that using taxis and the city’s bus transit perfectly suitable. Movement within the city using these methods tends to be affordable and mostly free of hassle. However, if you will be in Sydney long enough to venture out into its suburban areas or outlying districts, where you can find less crowded beaches and quaint shops that are off the beaten path, it would be a good idea to rent a car upon landing at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport. Traffic in Sydney can be daunting, but easily managed by anyone who has driven in other high-population areas.

The part of the city in which you seek accommodations will depend largely on budget. If you would like to be near the water and your budget will allow for a little extra expense, look to the coastal district known as The Rocks. Alternatively, you may want to remain within the more metropolitan area of City Centre, where lodging is accompanied by some of the city’s best shopping. However, if you are looking for slightly more affordable accommodations, City South offers hotels with more reasonable rates. This district may especially be appealing if you intend to stay for longer than a week.
