Dating tips: What does his hairstyle say about him?

In the dating world, most hope to find the perfect combination of personality and chemistry, but many impressions and assumptions occur at first sight and are based on appearance. If you’re worried about missing the signs of a high-maintenance beau, this is something to watch for — especially in his hair. By observing his hair habits, you can determine whether he’s self-assured or completely self-absorbed.

Highlights

If your potential date has extensive highlights or confesses to using only professional-grade hair products, he could be high-maintenance. This indication is a tricky one, though — some people live frugally but treat themselves to well-maintained hair.

What this means: Your date enjoys the finer things in life from time to time, such as fancy dinners and vacations.

Time-Consuming Hairstyle

A preoccupation with stylish hair could simply indicate a desire to look presentable. In many cases, this is a healthy habit. It’s also natural to want to look good for your date, or to date someone who puts time into looking good for him.

Depending on a person’s hair type, hair care can be expensive and mandatory, but if it’s over-the-top, so is your future partner’s spending.

What this means: Your date likes to look a certain way and understands that first impressions are important.

Trendy vs. Timeless

While men don’t have as many options with their hair as we do, they can give off signals about being trendy or timeless with relative ease. If his hair accessories include an upside-down visor, you know he’s more about style and trendiness, and while that can be fun, he may not be looking for a long-term relationship. (It’s also probably a bit harder to kiss someone wearing a visor, even if it is flipped the other way.)

Like ladies, guys can select traditional haircuts, but style them in a trendy way. What you see on your date isn’t necessarily what you’ll get all the time.

What this means: Your date is multi-faceted, and probably into many different roles in his life. He probably organizes his time efficiently and sees himself as good at multiple things.

The Bald Head

Bald-headed men may be that way due to hair loss or illness. However, an increasing number of young men have been sporting the bald head for stylish reasons. This hairstyle is clean, functional and bold. It accentuates other features of a man’s face and suggests he isn’t trying to hide something.

Most men who choose to shave their hair spend a certain amount of time on shaving and scalp care.

What this means: He’s bold and adventurous (possibly athletic as well), though not without intellectual qualities — think Captain Picard.

Styles for Women to Avoid

For women, short haircuts can be freeing, age-appropriate, cute and stylish. However, there is one haircut you should avoid having: the “Kate Plus 8″ hairstyle. This ‘do is spiked in the back with bangs in the front. Unless you’re looking to give the impression of having an aggressive, Type-A personality, avoid it. The signal it sends: I’m more interested in control than someone else’s feelings.

(If you feel strongly enough about Kate’s hair, feel free to like the Hate Kate’s Hair Facebook page.)

I prefer a man who is attentive to his hair but doesn’t spend a ridiculous amount of time on it. My husband maintains a military-style haircut. When it grows out a bit he maintains its shape with inexpensive hair gel. This also reflects a tendency to view things from a logical and utilitarian capacity, which is a perfect match for my creative and abstract personality.
