Crocheted Cloche Hat with Brim Instructions

The cloche hat was very popular in the 1920’s and has made a recent revival. The original cloche hat was made from felt with a brim that road slightly above the eyes. Today, cloche hats are made from many types of material including yarn. A simple crocheted cloche hat with brim takes approximately one hour to complete.

Things You’ll Need:

Approximately 3 ounces of 4-ply worsted weight yarn
Size J/10/6mm crochet hook
Scissors

Instructions:

Row 1 – Chain 3 stitches. The last 2 chain stitches count as the first double crochet stitch in the row and in each row thereafter. Complete 11 double crochet stitches in the fourth chain from the hook. Join the last stitch to the top of the chain with a slipstitch.

Row 2 – Chain 2 stitches. Double crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Complete 2 double crochet stitches in each stitch around for a total of 24 stitches. Join the last stitch to the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch.

Row 3 – Chain 2 stitches. Double crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Double crochet in the next stitch then complete 2 double crochet stitches in the following stitch – repeat this pattern around for a total of 36 stitches. Join the last stitch to the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch.

Row 4 – Chain 2 stitches. Double crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Double crochet in the next 3 stitches then complete 2 double crochet stitches in the following stitch – repeat this pattern around for a total of 45 stitches. Join the last stitch to the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch.

Row 5 – Chain 2 stitches. Double crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Double crochet in the next 4 stitches then complete 2 double crochet stitches in the following stitch – repeat this pattern around for a total of 54 stitches. Join the last stitch to the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch.

Row 6 – Chain 1 stitch. Double crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Pattern for repeat – Skip one stitch. Single crochet then double crochet in the same stitch. Repeat the

Row 7 to 16 – Repeat Row 6.

Row 17 to 20 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in each stitch around. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch in the row.

Row 21 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in the front loop of the next 3 stitches. Complete a half double crochet in the front loop of the next 3 stitches. Complete a double crochet in the front loop of the next 7 stitches. Half double crochet in the front loop of the next 3 stitches. Single crochet in the front loop of the next 3 stitches. Slipstitch in the front loop of the next stitch. Turn.

Row 22 – Slipstitch in the second stitch. Single crochet in the next 3 stitches. Complete a half double crochet in the next 10 stitches. Single crochet in the next three stitches. Slipstitch in the next stitch. Turn.

Row 23 – Slipstitch in the second stitch. Single crochet in the next 11 stitches. Slipstitch in the next stitch. Turn.

Row 24 to 27 – Chain 1 stitch. Single crochet in the next 13 stitches. Finish off after the last row.

Row 28 – Second side of brim….Turn the hat and work in the back loop of Row 21. Repeat Rows 21 to 27..

Crocheted Hat Band:

Row 1 – Chain 22 stitches. Complete 2 single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in the next 19 stitches. Complete 5 single crochet stitches in the last stitch. Turn and crochet on the opposite side of the chain.
Row 2 – Single crochet in the next 19 stitches. Single crochet 3 times in the last stitch. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch in the row. Finish off.

Finishing:

Step 1 – Attach the yarn to the center back of the cloche hat with a slipstitch. Chain 1 stitch.

Step 2 – Single crochet around the edge of the hat, through both layers of the brim and around the remainder of the edge. Slipstitch the last stitch to the first stitch in the row. Finish off.

Step 3 – Center and place the hat band above the brim. Attach the hatband to the crocheted cloche with two 1-inch buttons placed on both sides of the hatband.

Tips:
Decorate the top of the brim with crocheted flowers rather than a hatband. Make a crocheted flower by chaining 2 stitches. Complete 11 single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Join the last stitch to the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch. Chain 10 stitches then single crochet in the next stitch – repeat the pattern around to create a daisy type flower.
