Creative Ways to Use Washcloths

Washcloths are a dime a dozen in a non-literal sense. Many people no longer use them since bath puffs are still as popular as ever. Even if they are never used for their intended purpose, they have many creative uses that are as practical as they are unique, and they are very green. Try these creative ways to use washcloths, and give an old linen closet liner a completely new use. You can make environmentally-friendly soap mitts, dust mitts, wipes and more.

Begin by Softening Old Washcloths before Finding New Uses

Old stiff washcloths are not good for much, not even rags. After all, they are scratchy and stiff, and they will not absorb moisture to their fullest potential. However, they are easy to soften and save. Begin by softening and restoring old washcloths with ordinary white vinegar. Soak them in a gallon of hot water and a half-cup of white vinegar for about thirty minutes. Pour the washcloths and vinegar water into the washing machine, and wash and dry them as usual. They will be much softer and ready to use in creative and green ways.

Create Soap Mitts for the Bath and Shower

A person could spend several dollars a year buying and throwing away nylon bath puffs. They fall apart, sometimes just weeks after purchase. They are not designed to last, and they are a waste in more ways than one. These bath accessories are far from green. Stop using bath puffs and turn ordinary washcloths into bath mitts for bathing and showering using this creative method. Simply stitch three ends together, and place a bar of soap inside. Not only will this save money on bath puffs, but it will also save money on liquid soap. Shower gel is also a huge waste of money. Dollar for dollar, bars of soap are the better buy, and they are the greener option. Use washcloths to make bath mitts for the entire family. This is one of the most creative and money-saving ways to use washcloths, and they are a green alternative to disposable products and unnecessary liquid soaps.

Make Washable Dust Mitts

Pockets made from washcloths are good for more than holding bars of soap. They make fantastic washable dust mitts, and they can be attached to plastic handles and used in place of disposable paper dusters. They provide a green way to clean. Stitch three sides of two washcloths together. Place the mitt over a hand for dusting, or use a rubber band to secure it to a plastic duster handle. This creative new duster head can be washed again and again, and nothing will end up in a landfill.

Go Green and Use them for Baby Wipes

Baby wipes can cost a small fortune when purchased week after week for two years or longer. Forget about using disposable baby wipes to clean your baby’s face and bottom. Use soft absorbent washcloths instead. They can be rinsed and soaked in a bucket of vinegar and water until ready to wash in hot water. Be sure to keep the filled bucket out of reach of the child. Keep one or two dozen on hand to use specifically for the baby’s bottom. This green way to clean your baby’s bottom will not result in allergic reactions or unnecessary waste. For a really green way to clean, dry these washable wipes on a line in the sunshine. Since they were washed with vinegar they will remain as soft as ever, and once again, absolutely nothing will go to waste.
