Comic Ball

Everyone has a favorite Sunday comic, don’t they? No matter who you are there’s likely at least one Sunday comic strip that you love to read. I, myself, have enjoyed comic strips for over 50 years. Not only have I enjoyed reading them but I’ve enjoyed using them to make things, too. One of the cutest things you can make with a comic strip is a display ball. Set it on a coffee table, shelf, or other surface, and just let people enjoy it as they see it. With comics all over it, anyone who picks it up and looks at it will thoroughly enjoy it.

You’ll need a Styrofoam ball to make the comic-theme decorator piece. Choose a ball in any size when you go to a nearby craft store. Or, buy more than one ball and make a set of display balls.

Although the ball is round, and the comic ball can be, too, you’ll find that the ball will sit, and stay put, if you cut a tiny sliver off of one side to make a flat area to set it.

A wooden skewer works perfectly to hold the ball as you attach the comics. Run the skewer through the center of the ball and you’ll end up with two handles for holding it.

Cut the comic strips into small squares and/or other shapes. Make all the shapes the same or make assorted shapes. Just cut the strips into small pieces and you’ll be able to affix them easier than if you use large pieces. You can make the ball with all the same comics or you can pick characters from different comics and combine them on one ball.

Use white glue to attach the pictures. Just water it down a little bit and apply some to an area of the ball. Stick a chosen picture there, then coat over the top of the picture with the glue. Continue in this manner until the entire ball is covered. After removing the skewers, affix a picture over each hole on the ball.

If you have no Styrofoam ball you can also use a wooden ball or another type. If you can’t pierce the ball with the skewer, though, it will be a bit more difficult to apply the pictures. You don’t absolutely have to make the decorative ball from Sunday comics. You can use an old – but not valuable – comic book. Or, cut today’s characters – like Spongebob, Dora, or a Disney princess – out of children’s magazines.

The comic ball can be made to set on a shelf, or even to hang on a Christmas tree. It’s cute as can be, so simple to make, and will give everyone who sees it a big smile.
