Celebrating 60 Years of Miss Universe: 9th Miss Universe 1960 Miami Beach (FL). History!

1.The annual contest makes its first-ever appearance in Miami Beach (Florida, US). There are forty-three entries. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (East Middle), Portugal (West Europe), Tunisia (North Africa), and Spain (West Europe) make their worldwide debuts. Meanwhile, the Socialist Republic of Poland does not want to take part in the annual event.

2. Among the international judges are Fernando Botero of Colombia , a young-up-and-coming painter.

3.Miss Italy 1960, Daniela Bianchi, reaches the pinnacle with a Miss Photogenic title for the first time ever. But that isn’t all! Under Bianchi’s leadership, the Italian Republic is Vice MU and improves upon its fifth place finish four years earlier and following being regarded as the pre-pageant favorite in July 1959. Bianchi then turned to acting, starring alongside Neil Connery, Bernard Lee, John Ireland, and Lotte Lenya.

4. Black-haired Linda Jeanne Bement from Salt Lake City (Utah,USA) is elected as the first non-Asian/Latin American Miss Universe since July 1956 ,after a win over top-ranked Miss Italy, Daniela Bianchi (a born-actress) in the finals. Since then, the Americans don’t have to wait long for the United States’ representative to get their third award. Bement’s victory makes the United States among the most successful countries in the world (she is the the 9th American woman in a row to qualify for the semis).

5. Surinamese-born Christine Jie Sam Foek becomes the first South American from Asian origin to compete at MU.

6.Wearing the traditional Kimono, Japan’s national dress, Akiko Kojima crowns Linda Bement MU…

7. The Southeast Asian country of Burma – towards the end of the 1980s,the original name was changed to Myanmar by the country’s military dictatorship– is making some progress in the Pageant. Why? There is a tie between Miss Burma (Myint Myint May) and Miss Louisiana (Judy Rebecca Fletcher) for the Miss Congeniality trophy.

8.Danish-born Antje Moller is disqualified after it is discovered that she is only sixteen years.

9.Miss Flora Laughten Hoyos will be the first Cuba’s exile -elected in Florida– to represent the island in Miss Universe in Miami Beach, one of world’s most anti-Communist cities. She will compete under the name of “Cuba Free”.

10.For unknown reasons, three national delegates from Latin America, Oceania, and sub-Saharan Africa don’t compete in July 1960: Lorena Velasquez from the United Mexican States, Maria Flohr of Tahiti – a French territory on the Pacific South– and Miss Sale Assouen of Cameroon-one of the world’s youngest republics (and West Africa’s newest independent country).

11.Haiti can not make its international debut. Why? The island’s representative Claudinette Fourchard is disqualified after it is revealed that Miss Haiti 1960 is married.

12. Linda Bement -whose eyes are the most beatiful on the globe along with Bette Davis (actress)–is honored in Utah -Beehive State– on her return from the international event.
