The German Shepherd
German Shepherds are one of the most popular herding dogs. They too, are known to be extremely intelligent and enjoy learning. German Shepherds are commonly used in law enforcement and are often seen in airports searching out drugs or weapons. They normally excel in agility and obedience trials and are easily trained. The German Shepherd is known to be a brave and protective dog with a mild temperament. The German Shepherd can be the best herding dog for singles or families with children, as long as they are properly trained and the owner has time to spend with them. Buying this breed from a reputable breeder is a must. Due to the popularity of the German Shepherd, many owners have unknowingly purchased a puppy that is inbred, which may cause the dog to be nervous or unsociable.
The Pembroke Welsh Crogi
For a smaller sized pet, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the best herding dog to have as a family pet. This breed dates back to the 12th Century and was commonly used to herd cattle. The Welsh Pembroke Corgi is normally black and tan, sable colored, red or fawn. They stand about twelve inches high and weigh between 25 and 35 pounds. This breed is known to be happy and content just spending time with its family. They are as highly intelligent as their larger counterparts and are the best herding dog for those wishing to have a smaller sized pet.
