Back to School Saga Weeks Four and Five

I admit I am the worst for gauging time, and my ability to fit in as much as I think I can in a given 24 hour period. That, unfortunately, has not stopped me yet for stretching myself thin on the calendar of work, school and family.

This week, we have been exposed to a full month of school. And as the routine begins to solidify, it is becoming crystal clear that a bad day at work will not make any difference as to the amount of homework that needs to be produced in a given week. And Thursday was the worst day in many years. So, my husband and I took a break from our algebra homework.

Like the proverbial snowball, we waited until after class on Saturday to complete the four sections of the previous week’s assignments. Which meant I did not get to my English homework which is due tonight at midnight. Instead, it was psychology that was read (a chapter and a half) in the time alotted for English. Then there is the Study Skills class and Computer Skills work that are also due tonight.

And what continues to happen is life. I still have to show up for my job, work while I’m there (though there are a few perks to being the boss, like I’m finishing this up right before lunch) and then attend the kids when I get home. My youngest told me last night, and not the first time since school began, that she misses me and hates that I have so much homework. Point taken, it’s too much on the family. I’ll cut back by a class next time.

I’m seriously considering having someone come clean the house. Tom is typically against it, but when I mentioned it this morning he said nothing. It is just more than I can handle right now, and he feels the pinch as well.

So, our “sacred” Friday nights have given way, officially, to more study time. I keep feeling like I can resolve this by tighter scheduling, but I logically understand that there are only so many hours in the day. So, we will be making some adjustments in the school schedule, routine chores and cooking. Thursday, our typical math homework night is now also crock-pot dinner night. We have eaten more fast food in this last month than we have in the last year. Since the budget won’t support that, we will be makiing menus instead of trips to the drive-thru.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. And I know I said I’d update each week, but let’s be realistic. I’ll check back in when I come up for another breath!
