Adele Named Billboard’s Top Artist with Failed Relationship-Inspired Album

Singer-songwriter Adele has been named Billboard’s top artist. The 23-year-old is the first female to be granted the Billboard title of “top artist,” making history after also receiving six Grammy nominations for her sophomore album, “21.”

Adele released “21” in January in Britain and in February in the United States. The album has already surpassed Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” in U.K. sales, making it the biggest selling album this century in Britain.

The songs on “21” are heartbreakingly beautiful, inspired by the demise of a relationship. The anger, sadness, regret, and ultimate forgiveness come through in the lyrics and music of the album’s tracks, but “21,” as universally relatable as it is, is not just another jilted lover album. Adele’s words and voice manage to infiltrate themselves into the soul of the listener and provide a glimpse into her process of coping- wallowing, accepting, and trying to move on.

The biggest hit to date from the album, “Rolling In The Deep,” regretfully states that they “could have had it all,” while “Fire To The Rain” admits that there’s a “side to you that I never knew.” “Someone Like You” gives a good-bye of sorts with the lyrics, “Never mind, I’ll find someone like you. I wish nothing but the best for you.”

In case her listeners are wondering, Adele’s told “Blackbook” that she’s over the relationship and that it’s “very much in the past.” Good. Your fans are sorry you suffered, but simultaneously thankful that you did, for a wonderful album was born of your pain. Congratulations on being top artist, Adele.
