For every generation this question somehow pops up, “Is America getting dumber”? For many people of the elder generations the answer would be yes, just as the generation before them thought as well. But honestly, what is dumbing us down?
For years American schools have been cutting their annual costs to cope for government’s spending. (Which I think is thoughtless because education should be our main concern as a country.) Did you know that only 84.5% of all American students graduate from high school and out of that percentage 27.5% gain a bachelor’s degree or better? And for most schools they just teach you so you would remember the information for the exam. Some people believe that having a degree doesn’t measure you intelligence; that is true, but most people without a diploma doesn’t even care about education in the first place. We are ranked 18th, out of the 36 industrialized nations. Once we use to be the top ranking nation in education, now we are barley in the top half. I do love America, but how can you be proud of something knowing we have the potential to do much better?
The entertainment industry is also a big problem that America is facing. I have a little quiz to test my theory: Who is Snooki? Did you know the answer? Now I have another one for you. Who are the candidates running for president, besides Obama? Did you know that one too? You see, this generation cares more about celebrities than political figures that are running America. I am a big fan of television, but come on, every channel that is directed for the youth either are senseless or try to make being a jack ass (excuse my language) cool and “hip”. You can even tell by the new music that America is become dumb, there is no more emotions.
So who is to blame for dumbing America? The real answer is us. Every American citizen has to take fault of dumbing down America, because we knowingly do nothing to help our youth, or even our schools prosper. Kids are the future of America we need to teach them everything we know so they can take our glorious nation to the top again.
