A Dog’s Best Friend

The call came late one fall afternoon. It was pouring rain. “There’s a tiny kitten sitting on a fence pole…alone…shivering,” said the voice on the other end. “Somebody needs to do something!” And somebody did.

She got in her car, as she had done a hundred times before, drove several miles on a muddy road to rescue a scrawny kitten. Five years later that same cat struts through her house like he owns it.

Of course it has been more than cats. There have been many dogs, a variety of birds, chickens, roosters, monkeys, pigs, goats, rabbits, skunks, and even a snake or two. Everyone knows that she cannot say no to an animal in need.

So, it should be no surprise that when someone’s car is broken down or needs a tired changed, or an elderly person’s yard needs mowing or a bereaved person needs a hot meal, she is there.

Maybe the way one treats an animal has something to do with how one treats another human being. Maybe.

Maybe that is why she is kind to me.
