Disney Land Resorts have a reputation as premium vacation destinations. You can spend a lot on money if you stay at one of the more expensive hotels like the Grand Floridian at Disney World or the Grand Californian at Disneyland and purchase top-tier ticket options. However, a fun trip is still possible even if you need to carefully count your pennies. There are many ways to pare down your expenses so you can pull off a Disney vacation on a budget. Step 1
Determine how much you can realistically pay for your Disney vacation. It is easiest to work backwards from that total and make adjustments to the vacation length, hotel choice and tickets to fit your trip within the allotted amount.
Step 2
Calculate the airfare or driving expenses for your Disney vacation. This is the area in which you have the least “wiggle room.” Your airline choices will be limited by your geographic location if you choose to fly. Your gas expenses will be determined by your distance from the Disney location you are visiting.
Step 3
Compare on-site and off-site hotel rates. Both Disneyland and Disney World have hotels right on their property, and off-site lodging is available in the surrounding area. Lodging that is farther away tends to have the lowest rates, but you must transport yourself to and from the theme parks or rely on a shuttle if the hotel has one. Disney World has “value” hotels that often have comparable rates to off-site properties.
Step 4
Create a daily food budget. You can often get by with two meals a day during a Disney vacation. Bring cheap snacks to eat for breakfast and make lunch your main meal, as Disney restaurant prices are often cheaper for lunch than for dinner. Eat off-site if you have your own vehicle or a rental car. Both Disneyland and Disney World have cheap chain restaurants within close driving distance.
Step 5
Select your tickets carefully. Disneyland and Disney World each have multiple theme parks. You can buy tickets that are good for one park each day or get a more expensive “Park Hopper” option that lets you move freely between the parks. Don’t buy this option unless your trip is short and you need it to maximize your time. Otherwise, plan on visiting a single park each day.
