10 Winter Beauty Mistakes that Smart Women Make

When the beautiful summer weather turns cold and dark, many women slip into some dreary health and beauty routines. There are 10 winter beauty mistakes that women make–and that you should avoid.

Choosing the Wrong Makeup Colors for the Winter. Certainly winter makeup colors are not always the same as those suited to summer months–but, often color is more dependent on the woman than the season. Too much color may put some women on the fringe of ridiculous–while too little leaves others looking pale and tired. Find a happy medium of winter approved colors suited to you.

Skipping Winter SPF. Whether they feel less at risk because the sun doesn’t seem as warm as during steamy summer days or simply because, during cold weather months, very little of the skin is likely exposed to the sun’s harmful rays–many women make a costly beauty mistake by skipping SPF. While a bottle of sunscreen may not be necessary–women certainly benefit from foundation or moisturizers with built in SPF protection.

Losing Sleep to the Winter Rush. You really do need your beauty sleep. While many realize that the body needs rest for better health–many fail to realize that the body also requires that rest to revitalize and repair cells that affect appearance. Sleep often takes a back seat to shorter daylight hours and hectic winter holidays. Try for at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

Neglecting the Feet until Sandal Season. While the feet are hidden away out of sight inside wool socks or trendy boots during cold, winter months–the feet should not be out of mind. Dry winter air is tough on the skin–especially the hands and feet. Continue pedicures, even if they are only simple soaks and moisturizing sessions at home.

Prolonging Chapped Lips. Dry, frosty air takes a toll on the lips. While many women understand the importance of lip moisturizers–they often forget that some of scents, flavors and ingredients in many popular lip balms actually worsen dry, chapped lips.

Bold Bronzing. There is a fine line between achieving a healthy, winter glow and looking silly. Many women continue to pack on summer bronzers rather than choosing softer shades for the winter.

Hand Sanitizer Dry-Out. Winter months bring cold and flu season and massive bottles of hand sanitizer pop up everywhere. Unfortunately, most traditional hand sanitizers are alcohol based and are very harsh to the hands. Pack along a moisturizing hand sanitizer or wash hands with soap and water and apply a moisturizing hand cream with every wash.

Breaking Summer Beauty Routines. During the summer, many women are more active and feel more visible to the outside world. During the winter, some women lose that beauty motivation and abandon tried and true beauty habits. It’s important to continue things like exfoliating and moisturizing during the winter months as well. Remember–maintaining winter appearance only makes regaining spring beauty that much easier.

Skipping Exercise. When the weather turns colder, even active women often retreat to a more sedentary, indoor existence. Exercise is just as important–if not more so–in the winter as it heightens circulation, helps maintain body weight and even helps you sleep and boosts moods from the winter doldrums.

Turning off the Humidifier. Winter air is cold and dry and that environment makes it tough for the body to maintain its beautiful balance of moisture. Simply adding a humidifier to the home helps limit the harsh dry air–and also helps battle winter cold and sinus symptoms.
