H1N1, should I get the vaccine?
Q: Okay so tomorrow we are getting the H1N1 flu vaccine at school. I already signed up for it. But I can quickly call the nurse and tell her I don’t want it anymore. At first I thought yay I’m going to get the vaccine. And that I will be prevented from getting the disease. But then I heard many rumors at school saying there was a lot of bad side affects from it. (like this girl’s brain got all messed up and this one guy was paralyzed from the hips down)I am totally scared. And did you know that the H1N1 vaccine is made from EGGS? well that could put me at a higher risk of getting side effects, considering the fact that I AM ALLERGIC TO EGGS! (its not serious, i only getting itchy from eatting eggs. but thats still puts me at a higher risk than others).oh yeah i am in my teens and i read online that a side affect for adolesences were fainting. yikes!omg what am i going to do, should i get it or not? have anybody else gotten it yet and had some weird side affects?
A: The risk of Guillain–Barré syndrome leading to paralysis from flu vaccination is about 1 in 8 million to 1 in 9 million using older statistics: with the latest batch of novel h1n1 vaccinations, the rate of GBS has been about 1 in 10 million, and the vast majority of GBS cases resolve and do not lead to paralysis. The risk of GBS from contracting the actual flu is MUCH higher. Since you have an egg allergy, however, you should NOT be vaccinated at a flu clinic and do need to get vaccinated in a doctor’s office.
What do you think about the H1N1 situation?
Q: Do you plan to get the h1n1 vaccine? Do you think the whole thing is made up by the government or do you think the virus is real? Do you know anyone who is or has been infected (and have seen the results firsthand)? How bad do you think things are going to get? Do you buy into any of the people saying the vaccine is poison and meant to make things worse (think the movie Pandemic)? Thanks in advance for everyone opinions.
A: Two out of three nurses don’t want to take it at the hospitals that I live near because it is still in the guinea pig stage of testing. Nobody knows what the long term effects might be and there is reason to suspect this particular vaccine is more questionable than most, apparently.I’ve already had the H1N1 and it was mild. It’s mild for most, apparently.Check out the Mayo Clinic site for legitimate health related information, not Yahoo! H1N1 Vaccine… Are you going to get one? What about your children?
Q: Ever since the first outbreak in April, all we’ve heard about is the H1N1 virus. At first it’s all I obsessed about, but even I am getting tired of hearing about it. One week it’s made out to be a huge killer, then the next week the media is saying to relax because it’s not that big of a deal. Either way, they’ve come up with a vaccine and soon they’re going to be pushing it at every clinic, school, pharmacy, etc. I’ve already received letters from my kids’ school saying that once it’s here they want all students to be vaccinated against it. I am not big on flu shots, I had my first and last one when I was just 16 when my mother forced me to get one, and that was 14 years ago. I haven’t had the flu since. The regular flu vaccine only protects against certain strains anyways. I’ve seen many people end up getting a flu even though they had gotten a flu shot. What’s the point? The thing about this new shot is that they slapped it together so fast. Many argue that it’s safe. But it’s too soon to say. Even if they’ve done hundreds of tests on it (which I doubt), just because it seems safe and no one has suffered any side effects doesn’t mean that they won’t. It could take a while to show its damage. I’d personally rather take my chances with this flu. This thing could mutate at some point, rendering the vaccine useless. And once it’s been injected into millions of people across the globe it will be too late. Either way we’re screwed. What if the government ends up forcing us to get this vaccine? And in the end it doesn’t work? And will cause side effects that will take a while to show up? Is this really a risk you want to take with your body? Do you really want to risk your children’s health to a vaccine we know virtually nothing about? Am I being a bad parent for not wanting to give them this shot? I’m tired of trying to follow what the media says and thinks… What is your opinion on this situation? What I meant by “follow” is by reading and watching the news. I try to stay informed. THAT’S what I meant. I don’t do anything unless I want to. But I’m getting sick of following this thing…. (I’m sorry, should I say I’m tired of watching the news, reading online articles, etc. so that YOU can better understand my point?”). I just want to be able to live a normal life and for my kids to be able to as well….
A: I myself have never had a shot for the flu, or any other sickness in my life. I don’t plan on getting one either. I have never gotten sick from not taking shots. Plus, this H1N1 vaccine is so new, and it is already becoming mandatory. I mean we don’t even know the full side effects and other disasters it can cause to people.
