- Some questions on the H1N1 vaccine?
- Q: Hey guys,I know everyone asks over and over again....well finally my school is offering the shot next week and I am 14 and a month ago, I was positive for the flu A, and it was most likely swine.I got the regular flu shot a while ago and I am the type that shots dont bother me and my family has been searching for this vaccine. What are the side affects? I have a soccer game the next day, so I hope nothing too bad.Can you contract it twice? I was thinking to get the shot just to make sure. It was not fun being sick. What are your opinions on the vaccine. I heard there was something in it that causes autism in children? And mercury? I eat alot of raw fish...but Im not sure.Sorry to be paranoid..im just curious. Thanks
- A: You stated that one month ago, you were "positive for the flu A". I'm presuming that "flu A" means a type A flu. There is more than one type A flu that infects humans -- seasonal H3N2, seasonal H1N1 and novel H1N1. Because you stated "..and it was most likely swine", I take it that some one made the assumption you had novel H1N1 flu but you weren't tested for it or perhaps the test was inconclusive. I'm guessing it was nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea along with the other symptoms that persuaded some one to believe it was novel H1N1 flu. If it was, you don't need a vaccination at this time. You should have immunity for at least one year.About autism & mercury...what you heard is that the thimerosal (mercury derivative) used as a preservative in the vaccine causes autism. But there are thimerosal-free vaccines and thimerosal clears the body in 6 weeks and only minute amounts are used in vaccines. It does not accumulate. Now, mercury and it's derivative thimerosal are regarded as neurotoxins -- There's no argument there. And large enough doses will affect a person. The autism debate concerns young children, particularly infants, and vaccines and that these children were genetically incapable of clearing the thimerosal from their bodies but there has still been no proven link between thimerosal and autism and there have been some very credible studies done to find one. However, studies continue. The mercury in fish is not thimerosal, it's mercury. I guess the name says it all, right? In the case of sashimi and sushi made with raw fish, two factors go into making sushi safe: the type of fish, and how the fish is handled. As a general rule, freshwater fish species are not safe to eat raw, because they often contain parasites which can only be eliminated by cooking. Ocean species are less likely to have parasites, especially if they are handled properly, which brings up the second factor. The best fish for sushi is processed rapidly at sea and then frozen. Rapid processing removes the intestines before they have a chance to burst and allow bacteria and parasites into the body cavity. Freezing kills any parasites which might have lingered, making the fish safe to use in sushi. In my opinion, flu vaccines and all vaccines are safe for most people. Of course, not everyone can receive all vaccines because of allergy or hypersensitivity to one or more vaccine ingredients.
