Zero is Forward Thinking

The world of motorcycles has grown over the past few years at a stimulating pace. KTM introduced their new 350 models and they changed their rear suspension to what has been a standard with other manufacturers. Fuel injection has finally hit the dirt bike industry also. Even some old faces such as Husqvarna re-entered with a great line up of bikes with much fan fare.

Starting as an idea in 2006, Zero Motorcycles now has 5 models all with their own select purpose. What makes this bike different is that it is powered by electric. Though electric powered transportation is not new, Zero’s constant push to improve the technology is. Other companies offer electric powered two-wheel transportation yet none have reached the success and capability similar to Zero.

The models offered are the Zero X, which is the flagship of the company; the Zero MX is the motocross version with superior suspension and handling. The Zero DS is their dual sport bike. The Zero S is their street bike and the Zero XU is known as their urban cross bike, which is built for regular street use yet has the durability to handle the bumps and bruises found within cities. The Zero X and MX also come with all the needed gear to be street legal for an additional $450/$500.00.

I headed to Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, CA knowing their array of bikes is huge and their knowledge of every type of machine is vast. I was able to look at two models, the XU and the S. Todd Baldwin noted that the street version has a bigger appeal due to the current economy and high fuel prices, as these bikes offer a more inexpensive way of commuting to work.

The fit and finish was on par with any other manufacture. The battery is centered within the frame under the seat and what would typically be a gas tank. The fairing has been designed to force air over the battery and motor, which in turn provides more stable and consistent power. The motors are lower and towards the rear of the frame and at first glance, it is obvious these are not your typical motorcycles. They have their own appeal, use and abilities unlike any other bike. Therefore, should not be compared to any other machine.
