Winter Farm Fresh Food Options in Santa Fe, New Mexico

It may be winter in Santa Fe but foodies continue to enjoy the farm to table tradition which is so popular in summer. Winter foods, specialty foods and farmer’s market gifts are available through the winter.

The markets offer traditional winter vegetables and specialty foods but are also lively places to go. I enjoy spending a morning with friends at the markets, taking photos of the naturally beautiful fresh produce and having a locally grown meal when all the shopping is done.

Santa Fe Farmers Market
Professional cooks as well as home cooks shop at the winter Santa Fe Farmer’s Market for winter vegetables such as kale, broccoli and squash as well as salad mix, honey, eggs, cheeses, grass-fed local meats, baked goods and more.

The Santa Fe Farmer’s Market heads indoors during the winter and becomes a great destination for a morning outing. You can enjoy live music, a fresh breakfast or lunch and peruse the cooking and gardening gift shop.

On Sundays, the Artisan’s Market takes over with a great selection of locally made gift, clothing and jewelry items.

La Montanita Co-op
La Montanita has three locations: one in Albuquerque, one in Santa Fe, and one in Gallup. La Montanita offers fresh organic produce, bulk foods, local organic beef, lamb and other meats and cheeses. It is not necessary to become a member of the co-op to shop at the stores. Farmers bring produce to a central point in Albuquerque and it is distributed from there.

The co-op stores resemble traditional grocery stores in that they do stock national brands that are consistent with their values. They have a dairy and deli department.

Hours and Days of Operation: Monday-Saturday 7am-10pm and Sunday 8am-10pm

Santa Fe Location: 913 West Alameda which is not far from downtown.

Grocery Stores with Fresh Offerings
In Santa Fe there are market chains that feature fresh, local produce (as well as other produce), organic foods and draw those who like to shop for healthy foods.

One of the most popular is Trader Joes located on St. Francis Drive. Not only does Trader Joes tout low prices and organic foods, they have the well-loved “two buck chuck” wine, a house brand that remains below $3.00 per bottle.

Other chain stores with a reputation for healthy foods are Whole Foods and Sunflower Farmers Market.
