Where to Stay in Los Angeles

As a resident of Los Angeles, I’m often asked where to stay in this vibrant, spread-out city. The hotel options are almost endless, as diverse as the neighborhoods they inhabit. Here are my picks for the best hotels in Los Angeles, a budget hotel recommendation, a luxury hotel recommendation and my personal favorite:

Budget
For a budget hotel, I would stay at Stay in downtown Los Angeles. The area is still a bit rough, but new nightlife in the area has also brought more security. You have all the fun of the new downtown area, including L.A. Live and the Staples Center, and are steps away from the subway, which can take you to Hollywood, Universal Studios and more.

If you’re coming to Los Angeles on a budget, I recommend using the city’s subway and bus system. A day pass is a bargain at only $5 and that covers all buses, subways and trains around the city. The system is quite comprehensive and will take you everywhere you want to go.

Rates at Stay Los Angeles are $35 per night per person in a shared room, with a shared bath. A private room for two is $60, also with a shared bath.

Recommended
For a hip, reasonably priced hotel experience, right in the middle of all the action of the Sunset Strip, the Standard is a great option.

Activities are limitless, within walking distance you have the Comedy Store, the House of Blues, along with trendy restaurants like Katana. A five minute cab ride either way puts you in Hollywood’s world of nightclubs or Beverly Hills’ world of luxury. Rates start about $200 a night, with discounts available online.

Luxury
For the ultimate in luxury Los Angeles hotel, I like the Beverly Hills Hotel, specifically the private bungalow villas. The bungalows are small houses, set behind the stately hotel, each with a few bedrooms and living areas, private pools and other super-lux perks.

In addition to the full array of hotel amenities which can be delivered to your door in minutes, the hotel also offers privacy. Small paths lead directly from the bungalows to the side street above the hotel. Rates for the 1150 square foot Deluxe Bungalow Suites start at $2300 per night.
