Visit Van Buren, Arkansas

Van Buren, Arkansas, is a town located off Interstate 40 West. It is nestled in the foothills of the scenic Ozark Mountains. Upon entering the town, the visitor feels that they have left this century, and re-entered the early 1800s.

The reason for this is the 10 block downtown area, which has been restored to its 1800s appearance. There are old fashioned street lamps, and storefronts that reflect that era. The Albert Pike Schoolhouse, the Courthouse, the Mount Olive Church, Fairview Cemetery, and the watefront area are some of the “:must see” sites in the town. A self guided walking tour is a good start to see the entire Victorian Main Street. If you enjoy antiques, you will find the antique shops to your liking. The proprietors of the stores are friendly, and enjoy browsers as well as purchasers. The downtown area has many fine shops to visit.

The town is one of the oldest cities in Arkansas. it was first called Phillips Landing, but its name was changed to honor the Secretary of State, Martin Van Buren.

The Railroad was an integral part of the city. It is still a draw for visitors. The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad Depot is located on Main Street. A 70 mile train ride travels through the Boston Mountains in a restored passenger car. There are two options for the tour. There is a 2.5 hour trip and another 3 hour trip. Reservations are required for both trips. You can check the fares, train schedules, and availability at 800-687-8600.

This train ride is especially scenic in the Fall season. The trees offer a panorama of beautiful colors. The Spring offers a good view, when the leaves are off the trees. Various forms of wildlife can be seen from the train. There are several high trestles that give a spectacular view of the Mountains.

The Van Buren Chamber of Commerce is very active in the town. It offers various activities, such as holiday fairs, etc. The town is always busy with tourists shopping, walking the downtown area, or riding the train.

Lodging is available in the town. Hampton Inn and Best Western motels are just a few of the choices.

Food is available at the restaurants in town. There are family type diners, fast food, and even Mexican fare located in Van Buren.
