Visit Orlando’s Best Local Breweries

The artisinal beer movement sweeping the nation has not missed Florida. Dozens of microbreweries, known more popularly these days as “craft breweries,” have opened during the past few years. Orlando, Florida, has one local brewery within its city limits, and two more that are really close.

Orlando Brewing

The only certified organic brewery in the state, Orlando Brewing is tucked away not far from downtown in an industrial area of the city, near the Amtrak station. Orlando Brewing produces seven year-round beers, but if you include seasonal and tasting-room-only small batches, there are more than 20 styles produced through the year and a dozen or so on tap at a time, according to Brewery President John Cheek. I love to visit Orlando Brewery in late September, when they tap the Oktoberfest beer. Hours are Monday-Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon till late, and Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. Brewery tours are Monday to Saturday at 6 p.m. No food is served, but you can bring in your own or order delivery from local restaurants. 1301 Atlanta Ave., Orlando. 407-872-1117.

Shipyard Brew Pub

This establishment just outside Orlando city limits in the funky community of Winter Park is as much of a bistro as a brew pub. Essentially a Florida outpost of Shipyard Brewing Co. in Portland, Maine, the premises house a market, bakery and restaurant as well as the brewery. Many of the standard Shipyard beers are served, but the in-house head brewer always has some of his exclusive creations on tap. After enjoying a fresh pint or two, you can pick up some gourmet food offerings and beers from other Florida breweries to take home. I enjoy the brew pub’s Monday Lobster Dinner, where you can order a full Maine lobster meal for less than $20. Wine is also served. Hours are Sunday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Thursday to Saturday until midnight. Appetizers start at $2.95; entrees are $9.95 and up. 200 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, Florida. 321-274-4045.

Big River Grille & Brewing Works

The only working brewpub on Disney World property offers a chance to cool off from a hot day at the parks with a freshly brewed beer straight from the brewery in back, walled off from the rest of the place big glass windows. The full menu makes it a great place for lunch, dinner, or between-meal munchies. The pub fronts the Disney Boardwalk, so be sure to save a little of your bread and walk out to the lake to feed the ducks afterward. I highly recommend whichever seasonal or “Brewer’s Choice” beer in on tap. Wine and cocktails are available. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until midnight. Appetizers start at $8.99; dinner entrees are $15.99 and up. 2101 N. Epcot Resort Blvd., 2101 N. Epcot Resort Blvd., Lake Buena Vista, Florida. 407-560-8780.
