Today’s Metal Roofs

Today’s metal roofing options are very different from the old corrugated tin roofs common on rural barns and sheds. Today, metal roofing systems are manufactured to resemble common shingles, slate, architectural shingles, wood shakes and even clay tiles.

These systems are available as shingles, in metal sheets and vertical panels. In commercial systems, such as office buildings or apartment buildings, rainwater runs effortlessly down the roof without pooling. This eliminates leaks and roof damage. The seams are sealed with special crimping devices. Only three things can remove this roof- a hurricane, a tornado or a roofer with special tools.

Today’s metal roofing options offer every homeowner the chance to stand out in their neighborhood. Metal shingles resembling historic shapes protect old houses across the country. Choose any number of color options for a customized roof.

For energy efficiency, today’s metal roofing options include energy star rated products for the homeowner or business owner. Special UV coatings reflect up to 98 percent of the sun’s UV rays, helping to keep the attic cool and lowering energy costs. Although higher in price, the energy savings pays for the difference. Non- energy star rated roofs are available as well.

Longevity is another reason to choose a metal roof. Asphalt shingles are rated to last between ten and thirty years. In some areas, no shingle makes to their rating due to storms and hail. Metal roofs are strong and resilient. Most roofing systems come with warranties against hail damage. At best, the hail can only dent a roof, but with a warranty, those shingles are replaced quickly. Metal roofs last between fifty and one hundred years. Consider replacing an asphalt shingle roof every ten years or less to purchasing a metal roof once in a lifetime.

Natural metals develop a distinctive patina over time. This is especially true of copper roofs. Most visitors take no notice of roofs, but copper roofs are an exception. Their look is one of a kind, and there is no mistaking a true copper roof.

If storm damage dents or bends a set of metal shingles, the roofer replaces them easily. Instead of going to a landfill, the damaged shingles are recycled. Metal roofs also add to the resale value of the property.

Time, the wind and sun eventually do dull the colors of metal roofs. This takes up to several years, depending on the roof, its coatings and the area. The roofer cleans the existing roof, primes and repaints or recoats the surface. UV reflective coatings can be added to any metal roof at any time. There is no need for a new roof. Change roof colors when you change the house colors- no one knows you didn’t re-roof the house unless you tell them, or they saw the painters.
