The World Beyond the Waterfall

Nobody ever thought to look there. Scientists searched for various life forms all over the world, in so many places, but they just never looked there. It was just another waterfall. Who would ever think it could be so different from all of the other waterfalls we have ever seen?

All it took was one curious child. Casey wondered what was behind the water, so he reached his hand into the falling water to find out. It was a small natural waterfall, in the middle of a park. Many people visited the park everyday. The day the beings were discovered was just another busy day.

Casey reached through the waterfall, and felt something strange. It was squishy, and gelatinous. He wrapped his hand around it, and pulled it out. What he saw made him scream. The tiny globulous creature looked up at him with its large eyes, then opened its large mouth and screamed back. The eyes and mouth were almost as large as the creature itself when they were open. It then rolled into a ball, and rolled off Casey’s hands and back into the water.

Casey’s sister, Maddy, pointed at Casey and laughed. “You scream like a little girl!”

Casey’s mother, Barbara, ran up to him, worried. “What is it? Are you okay?”

Casey shrugged his shoulders. “I think so.” Then he proceeded to reach his hand back into the little waterfall.

Barbara pulled Casey back by the shirt. “What are you doing? Isn’t that how you got hurt in the first place?”

“I didn’t get hurt, mom. I just got scared. But I think it’s OK.” Casey squirmed away from his mother, then stuck his hand back into the waterfall. He felt the squishy thing again, wrapped his hand around it, then pulled it out again. He then opened his hand to show the creature to his mother and sister.

Maddy walked up slowly, and peered over her mother’s shoulder. Barbara bent down, peering over Casey’s shoulder at the strange object.

Then the huge eyes opened, looking up at Casey. Maddy and Barbara both gasped, backing up. Then the creature’s eyes moved, and locked it’s gaze on Maddy. Maddy stared for a split second, not sure what she was looking at. Then she screamed.

The creature opened its large mouth and screamed back, then rolled into a ball and attempted to roll away. Casey held on, not letting the creature escape. It began rolling in place, turning in circles on Casey’s hand.

Barbara was still staring, with her mouth wide open, when she realized what was happening. “It’s a new creature,” she said. “I think you should put it back sweetie, it looks really frightened, and we don’t know if it’s dangerous.”

Casey began to put the creature down.

“Wait!” A strange voice came from the other side of the stream.

The three of them looked up, and saw a man recording everything on his iPhone. “I just want to get this from the right perspective.”

The man jumped onto a rock in the stream, then another, then onto the other side of the small stream. “Okay, you can let it go now,” the man said.

Barbara stared at the man, disgusted. “How long have you been recording my child on your sick little phone?”

“No, no, no… I’m just recording the little blobby thing. It’s amazing! I’ll show you when I’m finished, if you want. You’ll see.” The man put the phone up closer to the creature.

“Hey, step back,” Barbara said, pushing the man back a few paces.

“Okay, okay, I can get it from here.” The man shook his head as he fixed the iPhone back on the little creature.

The creature had stopped squirming. Casey opened his hand again, then held his hand down to the ground. The little creature rolled onto the ground, then stopped for a moment, seeming to get its bearings.

It then seemed to turn its head a bit toward the man with the camera phone, and opened its eyes, looking straight into the camera. Then it opened two teeny slits that appeared to be nostrils, and began to sniff.

The man moved his phone closer, but the creature recoiled slightly. He tried moving more slowly. The creature remained in a recoiled position, but slowly moved its head forward, sniffing with his tiny nostrils.

The man moved the phone right in front of the creature’s face. The creature blinked twice, staring at the camera, continuing to sniff. The the creature stopped for a moment, then stuck out its two-foot tongue to lick the phone, and the fingers holding the phone.

This time, the man recoiled, falling on his butt and letting out a small scream with his mouth closed. The creature cocked its head for a moment, then rolled back into the water.

A few days later, Casey’s family’s front yard was swarming with reporters. Everyone wanted to know about the new video posted to YouTube. They couldn’t understand how anyone even found them. Apparently, some school friends had let the cat out of the bag.

The strange man was already bombarded by reporters. His name was George, and he just happened to be a scientist. After the footage was verified as real, people began to stalk George. George nicknamed the creatures “Eyeballs.”

After George told them the location of the little waterfall, hundreds of reporters began to swarm the place. The police had to come and kick them out. Hundreds of the little Eyeballs were pulled from their homes and placed in cages.

It was all very sad. But then something amazing happened. Until the little Eyeballs had been studied for several months, nobody knew that they were smart. They could communicate with each other using their thoughts. They also had a penchant for taking large bites out of people they sensed were about to hurt them.

The one thing nobody had learned after months of study was that the Eyeballs could squeeze through tight spaces. In fact, they could squeeze through a space as small as one sixteenth of an inch.

Once the Eyeballs realized that humans were not going to leave them alone, they decided to escape, and move to a new home. At midnight, Pacific Standard Time, once all the doors had been closed, and all the scientists had gone home, all 5,623 Eyeballs climbed out of their cages, all across the world. Most of the Eyeballs were in North America, but about 560 had been sent to other countries.

They decided to meet in the middle, at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. They all crawled out, then rolled and rolled and rolled, as quickly as they could. They could roll fairly quickly; about 50 mph. They didn’t care about roads, because cars wouldn’t kill them. When an Eyeball was hit by a car, it would squish down flat, then pop right back up and keep rolling.

They could roll over rocks, through the mountains, and through lakes and streams. They rolled and rolled for days, eating up bits of plants for salad, and bits of bugs for protein. They rolled and rolled until they reached the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Once they met up with all of their friends, they decided to dig a hole and stay at the bottom of the ocean. They had plenty of food, and their skin could filter out the excess salt. They would save a small amount of salt to use as seasoning on their yummy seafood.
